CG-TIC Data Scientist (Fixed Term)

Cambridge-GSK Translational Immunology Collaboration (CG-TIC) (Fixed Term)

We wish to recruit a Data Scientist to join the Cambridge-GSK Translational Immunology Collaboration (CG-TIC), a growing partnership between the University of Cambridge and GSK. Focused on kidney and respiratory diseases, the collaboration leverages the world class capabilities of Cambridge University to provide transformational impact for patients, while aligning with GSK R and D strategic priorities.

The Data Scientist will play a pivotal role in the development and deployment of advanced computational pipelines aimed at optimizing data analysis in this critical collaboration. This includes the collection and integration of pseudonymised clinical metadata and genomic experimental data, ensuring rigorous data management and compliance with ethical standards.

The successful candidate will leverage the established infrastructures of the University Research Computing Services, including the High-Performance Computing cluster and the Secure Research Computing Platform (SRCP), to design and implement robust analytical frameworks. These pipelines will facilitate real-time data processing and enhance the efficiency of data-driven insights, which are essential for advancing our understanding of kidney and respiratory diseases and translating discoveries into impactful therapeutic strategies.

Who you'll be working with:

The role is based in the Department of Medicine, working with researchers based in the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology & Infectious Disease (CITIID), the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute (HLRI), and other University researchers who are part of the CG-TIC. You will work under the supervision of the Senior Data Manager to assist clinical and analytical teams within CG-TIC in processing and analysing diverse and complex datasets.

What you will do:

You'll be working on a diverse range of projects in the core analytics team, involving clinical and experimental data, utilising cutting edge tools and platforms for ingestion, QC and analysis. You will develop and provide pipelines (e.g., using Nextflow) for use by the analytics team in investigate work. You will co-ordinate with cross-functional teams including biostatisticians, researchers, clinicians and software developers to ensure integration of analytical methods with ongoing research initiatives. Attention to detail and good organisational skills are key to the role.

What experience you will have:

  • An MSc. or PhD in a biological science is desirable.
  • Experience processing and analysing large biological datasets.
  • Experience of development in a programming language such as R or Python.
  • Comfortable working with Linux/Unix and shell scripts.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database design.
  • Experience with workflow management tools (e.g., Nextflow) for reproducible research is desirable.
  • Some experience with high-performance computing platforms is desirable.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to present research findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

More information about the role is attached in the 'Further Particulars' document.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
