Position Summary

The Chief Advanced Practice Provider (PA) is a senior clinical and administrative leader responsible for overseeing advanced practice providers (APPs) and coordinating high-quality patient care in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. This role combines advanced clinical practice with operational leadership, program development, and care coordination within a complex academic medical environment.

The incumbent works collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, administrative staff and the Department’s leadership team to ensure seamless, patient-centered, evidence-based care across ambulatory and inpatient settings. The role also serves as a liaison between APPs, physicians, departmental leadership, and hospital administration to support strategic growth, operational excellence, and continuous quality improvement.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Patient Management

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations; evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients across the care continuum.
  • Order, interpret, and act on diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, ECGs, etc.).
  • Develop, implement, and modify patient care plans and clinical pathways.
  • Provide pre-operative evaluation, optimization, clearance, and post-operative follow-up care.
  • Perform therapeutic and procedural interventions including injections, wound care, suture/staple removal, and drain management as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatments, risks, benefits, recovery, and self-care.
  • Coordinate referrals and collaborate with multidisciplinary services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for patients, families, and referring providers.
  • Participate in inpatient rounds and consults as needed.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant documentation within the Electronic Medical Record.

Care Coordination and Program Development

  • Coordinate transitions of care across settings (clinic, inpatient, discharge, home care).
  • Facilitate pre-authorizations, scheduling, and multidisciplinary care planning.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of new clinical services, care protocols, and critical pathways.
  • Participate in clinical research initiatives and quality improvement programs.
  • Monitor and enhance operational workflows to improve patient experience and efficiency.

Leadership, Administration & Management

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development for APPs and clinical staff.
  • Facilitate regular APP meetings to foster communication, collaboration, and accountability amongst the group.
  • Establish a work environment that supports teamwork and a professional atmosphere
  • Actively participates in the recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, orienting, and training of new APPs.
  • Develop staffing models and coverage schedules to meet operational needs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Monitor staff competencies, licensure, credentialing, and compliance requirements.
  • Represent the APP team in divisional and institutional meetings.
  • Serve as liaison between APPs, physicians, administration, and external partners.
  • Participate in budget planning, fiscal reviews, and strategic initiatives.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, professional work environment.
  • Ensure adherence to institutional policies, regulatory standards, HIPAA, billing compliance, and safety guidelines.
  • Serves as a resource for APP best practice and utilization.
  • Builds trust and encourages collaboration among teams and between departments
  • Drives ongoing strategic initiatives and ensures adherence to policies and continuous quality improvement
  • Reviews and provides feedback to APPs about proper documentation, workflows, billing, and compliance

Quality, Compliance & Performance Improvement

  • Participate in departmental and service line quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in the Department’s M&M Conference.
  • Review charts, workflows, documentation, and billing for accuracy and compliance.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
  • Support institutional accreditation, regulatory, and audit processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience plus 5 years of advanced practice clinical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 10 years of experience preferred
  • Experience in orthopedic surgery preferred
  • Prior leadership, supervisory, or program development experience strongly preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus

Other Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Active NY State Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license
  • National certification (NCCPA for PAs; appropriate board certification for NPs)
  • DEA registration (or eligibility)
  • BLS required; ACLS preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and written documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and team-building ability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex academic environment.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with EPIC Electronic Medical Records and standard office software.
  • Experience with research, quality improvement, or program development.

Salary Range: $145,000.00 - $200,000.00
