About Stanford University’s Hoover Institution:

The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of economics, politics, history, and political economy—both domestic and foreign—as well as international affairs.

Founded in 1919 by Herbert Hoover before he became the thirty-first president of the United States, the Institution began as a repository of historical material gathered at the end of World War I. The library and archives have grown to be among the largest private repositories of documents on twentieth-century political and economic history. Over time the Institution expanded its mission from collecting archival material to conducting advanced research on contemporary history and economics and applying this scholarship to current public policy challenges.

JOB PURPOSE:

Provide institution-wide leadership of information technology, with authority over strategy, investment, and delivery to advance the mission of the Hoover Institution. Direct the design, development, integration, and implementation of programs, policies, and systems that elevate operational efficiency, research productivity, and digital stewardship while ensuring compliance, privacy, and robust cybersecurity. Oversee core services—from provisioning and connectivity to enterprise applications and data platforms—and lead the development and integration of internal business systems, media services, and digital collections technologies.

Champion and govern the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies across administrative and research functions, aligning data readiness, ethics, and risk management with institutional priorities. Build and develop a high-performing, collaborative team and cultivate partnerships across the university and with external stakeholders to drive innovation. Establish clear performance metrics and deliver sustained improvements in reliability, user experience, research enablement, and security posture, providing a decisive technology voice in institutional planning and decision-making at the Hoover Institution.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Lead and manage technical experts responsible for the development, design, and systems integration for client engagement, from definition phase through implementation; provide technical direction for one or more technical areas. May manage managerial staff.
  • Create and execute business and technical plans, and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Create procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with university policy and federal and state regulations.
  • Evaluate and assess metrics and program effectiveness; review trends and monitor proactively.
  • Establish and manage financials for a program, organization, and/or facilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the organizational structure and programs to ensure success, development of employees, and appropriate use of staff resources.
  • Lead, hire, coach, and evaluate performance of staff.

ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:

  • Track record of budget stewardship and KPI/metrics management to drive service reliability and measurable outcomes.
  • Foster strong relationships with key functions at Stanford to enable a secure command of governance, compliance, and risk management, ensuring robust cybersecurity and privacy practices at Hoover.
  • Demonstrate project management ability to employ integration, scope time management, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement components.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of increasingly technical work experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

The expected pay range for this position is $211,324 to $240,972 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
