Position Summary: The Geriatric Emergency Nurse Initiative Expert (GENIE) is a registered nurse who specializes in providing care to elderly patients within the emergency department setting, possessing advanced knowledge of geriatric assessment, conditions, and management strategies, often acting as a resource for other staff regarding the unique needs of older adults in emergency situations. Under the supervision of the Geriatric Emergency Department (ED) Medical Director, the GENIE will act in a dual consultant and coordinator role, performing screenings and assessments, advising on care and discharge planning, and coordinating follow up for identified patients 65 years and older.

Required Qualifications: Strong clinical skills in emergency nursing; Minimum 3 years recent emergency room RN experience; Geriatric Emergency Nurse Education (GENE) or Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders (NICHE) certification required within six months of hire; CPI Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification within 30 days of hire; Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload; Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications: Understanding of applicable regulatory requirements; MSN or Masters in related field; Demonstrated knowledge of UCI/Hospital/Departmental policies and procedures; Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families.

Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse; Pediatric Advanced Life Support; Basic Life Support; Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Education: Bachelor of Science, Nursing.
