Employment Type: Regular

Job Profile: Clinical Assistant Professor

Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time position within the Neurology and Neurosurgery service at UW Veterinary Care. This position is available at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the clinical track or tenure track, tailored to the individual candidate’s qualifications and interests.

The new hire will join a collaborative Neurology and Neurosurgery team currently composed of two clinical track faculty. In addition to faculty, the neurology team includes 3 residents, 2 designated veterinary technicians, 1 veterinary assistant or student hourly, and 1 client care liaison. The hospital also has other house officers, including 12 rotating interns, who rotate through the neurology service. Clinical service responsibilities in UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) include providing high-quality patient care and hands-on training for veterinary students, interns, and residents. Strong communication skills and a commitment to consulting with referring veterinarians and clients are essential.

Neurology manages approximately 1,200 cases annually out of the 27,400 small animal patients seen each year at UWVC. The SVM is a collegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certified experts in allied services including anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, physical therapy, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anatomic and clinical pathology, primary care, special species, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Additionally, the hospital has a dedicated LCSW who meets with clients and offers support groups.

In 2024, UWVC opened a new state-of-the-art hospital. Neurology now has access to an expansive designated surgical suite, including an intraoperative 3D C-Arm, surgical microscope, and CUSA. For advanced imaging, UWVC has a 3T GE MRI, CT, and PET/CT in-house. The Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR), located two blocks from UWVC, have PET/MR and a 4.7T designated research MRI. The Neurology Service has a brand-new fully loaded Natus electrodiagnostic machine, as well as two ambulatory EEG units (one Cadwell and one Natus).

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Service responsibilities (10%): Involvement in committees at the Department, School, and University level, along with involvement nationally at the professional committee level. Participate in continuing education programs for veterinary practitioners in Wisconsin and beyond.
