Clinical Research Assistant

Duties & Responsibilities:
Participant Assessments and Data Collection:
- Conduct assessments including collection of anthropometric, physical, interview, and survey data
- Data quality control and management
Lab & Biospecimen Management:
- Obtain blood samples via intravenous draw
- Observe best practices for safety and risk minimization
- Explain procedures to research participants and comfort those who may be nervous about needles
- Process samples for analysis in accordance with manualized procedures (e.g., blood, urine)
- Maintain up-to-date certification for phlebotomy and ethical conduct of human subjects research
- Maintain laboratory space, supplies, and equipment in accordance with institutional standards
Participant Recruitment, Screening and Retention:
- Screen participants for study eligibility in accordance with trial protocol
- Conduct orientation and informed consent visits
- Monitor rates of screening, enrollment, and ineligibility
- Retain study participants for follow up visits
- Work closely with lead Clinical Research Coordinator to manage day-to-day operations of ongoing studies.
- Assist with preparation of study-related materials (e.g., recruitment flyers and advertisements)
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Certification as a phlebotomy technician; e.g., NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT); ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT); AMT Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT)
- At least 1 year of experience conducting blood draws as a certified phlebotomist
- Familiarity with the research process and principles of research design
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Outstanding critical thinking skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize autonomously, and possess strong organization and time management skills
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced research environment while consistently centering participants’ needs and experience
- Flexibility with work hours to include early mornings for assessments, as well as occasional weekends and evenings as needed
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
- BA/BS preferred with a degree in health science or related field
- Previous experience conducting blood draws in a research setting
- CITI certification in human subjects research
This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000
