Position Summary

The Clinical Research Coordinator I will serve as the clinical coordinator for the Abate-Shen and Shen Labs and the central liaison for the Mark Foundation Center for Lineage Plasticity at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), supporting translational and clinical research studies in urologic and genitourinary oncology.

This role will manage day-to-day study operations across multiple protocols, including patient-facing coordination, biospecimen collection, and clinical data management. This role will work closely with physicians, surgeons, research staff, and external partners to ensure high quality data collection and regulatory compliance. This role will coordinate complex workflows across concurrent studies, applying judgment to prioritize tasks and address challenges as they arise; it will also contribute to process improvements and support guidance of new research staff.

Responsibilities

Manages day-to-day study operations with minimal supervision, coordinating multiple concurrent protocols and resolving operational or logistical issues in real time.
Utilizes Epic to find the appropriate surgeries for the Shen and Abate-Shen labs? research, supporting proactive identification of eligible patients for bladder, prostate, kidney, or other GU surgical procedures for organoid generation.
Coordinates the weekly identification of patients and leads patient recruitment, screening, and enrollment across a diverse portfolio of protocols and studies.
Obtains informed consent from patients after a full discussion of IRB protocols and proposed research and manages all consents. Acts as a liaison between patients and lab members, ensuring clear and appropriate communication and serving as a primary point of contact throughout study participation.
Keeps track of patient consent forms and organizes the corresponding human samples and subsequent data to ensure accuracy and completeness of all regulatory and study materials.
Coordinates with laboratory researchers, pathologists, pathology technicians, and surgeons to obtain samples from the cystoscopy suite and operating room, including the acquisition of rare and high priority biospecimens from GU medical oncology patients.
Manages and updates multiple REDCap databases of clinical patient information and laboratory specimens, independently maintaining data quality, performing data validation, and supporting cohort analyses and reporting.
Manages the IRB protocols and amendments along with other protocols for grants awarded within the Shen and Abate-Shen labs.
Identifies and implements improvements to recruitment strategies and data tracking systems to improve study coordination processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

2 years of experience in a clinical research setting.
Familiarity with Columbia health and research systems.
Experience with electronic medical records and/or research data including Epic and REDCap.
Understanding of clinical research systems and processes, HIPAA, Columbia IRB and other institutional or federal regulatory and compliance activities.
