Job Description Summary

The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center is recruiting two full-time, experienced Clinical Research Coordinators to join its multidisciplinary team. The research coordinators will have responsibilities that span across two areas: 1) driving the implementation of a study to understand the impact of medical marijuana on quality of life for patients with advanced cancer and 2) supporting Dr. Gary Weissman's team, the Clinical Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML) Lab. The CAIML Lab seeks to translate innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods into bedside clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) that alleviate uncertainty in critical clinical decisions. Projects within the CAIML Lab include (i) a study involving the use of a CDSS for older adults in primary care clinics to promote diagnostic excellence, and (ii) a study investigating the preferences and tradeoffs among primary care patients and clinicians associated with AI electronic consultations.

The Clinical Research Coordinators will be responsible for day-to-day study coordination and operations of the medical marijuana study. Duties will include: screening medical records to identify eligible patients; recruiting patients virtually and in the outpatient clinic; deploying weekly surveys and assessments to patients; maintaining study databases; and monitoring fidelity to the study protocol. The coordinators will maintain all regulatory clinical trial documents and protocols ensuring compliance with the Institutional Review Board, the Abramson Cancer Center Trial Management System, and Clinicaltrials.gov. The Clinical Research Coordinators will meet regularly with the broader study team, including the PI, Dr. Scott Halpern, to report on subject accruals and progress towards study milestones as well as troubleshoot any issues that arise during the conduct of the study. The Clinical Research Coordinators will also be responsible for supporting the CAIML Lab research portfolio. Duties will include screening medical records to identify eligible participants, recruiting eligible participants to studies virtually and in-person, administering study instruments (including the AI CDSSs) to participants, assisting in maintaining regulatory compliance, and assisting in study analysis and dissemination including manuscript preparation.

The CAIML Lab develops and tests predictive clinical decision support systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods.

The Clinical Research Coordinators will be responsible for day-to-day study coordination and operations of the medical marijuana study and projects within the CAIML Lab such as (i) a study involving the use of a clinical decision support system for older adults in primary care clinics to promote diagnostic excellence, and (ii) a study investigating the preferences and tradeoffs among primary care patients and clinicians associated with AI electronic consultations.

  • Managing all aspects of the study conduct and maintaining comprehensive knowledge of study procedures
  • Verifying patient eligibility for the study via medical chart reviews
  • Recruiting patients for study participation and obtaining informed consent
  • Deploying electronic surveys to collect data
  • Maintaining study data using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) and Qualtrics
  • Preparing study reports and Institutional Review Board documentation
  • Liaising with key stakeholders, including communication with study Sponsors and attending study team meetings
  • Monitoring and evaluating protocol compliance
  • Assisting the deployment of AI-based clinical support tools and systems

Position Contingent Upon Funding

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Preferred:

Qualified applicants must be comfortable working in diverse medical settings, be able to work independently, have excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills, and have an interest in working with patients with serious illnesses. Additionally, qualified applicants should be comfortable working in a team-oriented environment. Ideal candidates will have an attention to detail, the ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines, and strong interpersonal skills.

Pay Range

$52,500.00 - $53,418.00 Annual Rate Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job's level. Internal organization and peer data at Penn are also considered.
