The University of Sheffield invites applications for a Clinical Research Fellow to join an innovative interdisciplinary project focused on the application of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for assessing cervical tissue health in pregnancy. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated clinician-researcher to play a pivotal role in a landmark clinical research initiative spanning obstetrics, medical imaging, and biomedical engineering.

As a Clinical Research Fellow, you will join a dynamic, collaborative team comprising clinicians, engineers, scientists, and research managers. You will contribute to the clinical delivery, data collection, and technical development of novel OCT systems, while advancing your academic profile through active participation in study design, analysis, and publication. This position is ideally suited to an early-career doctor with a strong interest in academic medicine, medical technology, and women’s health.

This is an exciting research opportunity in the School of Medicine and Population Health. We seek a clinically qualified individual with strong organisational, analytical, and interpersonal skills. You should have a proven ability to participate in clinical research or trials and communicate effectively across disciplines. As this role involves clinical experimental studies with pregnant people, you will need clinical experience/knowledge in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. You will join a team of clinicians and engineers investigating novel clinical solutions to predicting and preventing preterm birth.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Research

  • Develop and refine clinical experimental protocols and assist in the development of suitable experimental device configurations for the clinical trial phase of the project.
  • Identify, recruit, and study cohorts of women by conducting measurement experiments using the new OCT device to assess cervical tissue.
  • Coordinate management of all data acquired, working with principal investigators and other team members.
  • Supervise and support undergraduate and postgraduate students as appropriate.
  • Prepare papers for journals/presentations at local/regional/national/international meetings to disseminate research findings.
  • Write supporting documents for the work of the research group, e.g. reports and grant applications.
  • Carry out administrative roles: e.g., act as secretary to research group meetings.

Professional/Academic

  • Work within a clinical sphere under the supervision of the Principal Investigators. Participate in mandatory study days.
  • Identify self-training needs to the project site lead.
  • Participate in training courses as required by project site lead.
  • Pursue a suitable programme of academic development leading to postgraduate certification.

Planning and Organisation

  • Continuously monitor and review results, planning daily to adapt to new developments.
  • As a staff member, you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, integrating the University sustainability strategy into your work activities whenever possible.
  • You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include achieving excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits that genuinely impact the subject area and the University’s overall achievements.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
