The Center for Healthcare Marketplace Innovation (CHMI) at UC Berkeley is a research lab, startup studio, and policy accelerator advancing the next generation of healthcare systems. We design human + AI powered solutions that reflect how people actually behave, how markets and health operations function, and how technology can help intervene effectively and responsibly.

Responsibilities

The Communications Manager will lead the Center for Healthcare Marketplace Innovation's communications outreach. CHMI is a research center dedicated to advancing healthcare systems. It collaborates with multiple departments at UC Berkeley (the School of Public Health, the College of Data Science and Society, etc.), other UC campuses (particularly the UCSF hospital system), and external stakeholders (ranging from startups to Oxford University to major hospital systems). The Communications Manager will create and execute on a communications plan that helps all these stakeholders align and keeps them aware of the research work.

Works with management and clients to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communications plans and/or projects.

  • In consultation with the center's executive director and faculty director, develop a communications plan that aligns stakeholders and publicizes the research and entrepreneurial work.
  • Create strategies for keeping the website and other communications collateral up to date and relevant.
  • Prioritize and plan for communicating about specific projects and events.

Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications.

  • Create communications collateral, including web pages, brochures, press releases, videos, and similar materials.
  • Manage campaigns to promote center research and projects.
  • Keep website and other communications up to date and current.
  • Align communications tactics with the overall center strategy.

Advises and consults with departmental/college administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution.

  • Work with center executive director and faculty director to ensure alignment of communications with center priorities.
  • Ensure brand compliance with UC Berkeley and Haas School of Business standards in consultation with the Haas marketing team.

Ensures production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.

Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.

  • Participate in center, institute, Haas, and campus meetings to ensure alignment with broader organization goals.
  • Proactively identify and communicate opportunities for communications improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and/or health sciences.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and/or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.
  • Exemplifies Haas' four Defining Leadership Principles: (1) Question the status quo; (2) Confidence without attitude; (3) Students always; and (4) Beyond yourself.

Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

  • This is a 1-year, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment that is eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
