The College was established by referendum in 1965 and opened September 1967. It is named for Dr. William Rainey Harper, a pioneer in the junior college movement in the United States and the first president of the University of Chicago.

Harper College is now one of the nation’s premier community colleges and one of the largest, serving approximately 29,000 students annually in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience teaching adults, demonstrating effectiveness in active learning experiences that promote skill development, critical thinking, and practical application.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with students from diverse backgrounds and varying academic experience levels.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of individual learners.
  • Commitment to promoting student success and fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Demonstrated good judgment in decision-making and classroom management, ensuring a respectful and effective learning atmosphere.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter of the course(s) being taught.
  • Flexibility and willingness to teach other topics or courses as needed, contributing to the diverse educational offerings of Community Education programs.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Harper College Community Education seeks instructors with a desire to teach innovative courses leading to career advancement, upskilling, or the attainment of professional continuing education units (CEU’s). We consistently accept proposals for new courses, workshops, seminars, and series in these three areas to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue rewarding careers or further their education.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and teach courses that align with industry trends and address the evolving needs of the community.
  • Engage students in active learning experiences that promote skill development, critical thinking, and practical application.
  • Promote the classes and participate in recruitment activities within your network to broaden the reach of potential learners.
  • Collaborate with Community Education team to ensure course materials and content are current, relevant, and aligned with educational objectives.
  • Provide mentorship and support to students as they progress through their educational journey.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback to promote continuous improvement and achievement of learning outcomes.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies, methodologies, and best practices in education to enhance course delivery and student engagement.
  • Prompt responsiveness to emails and communications from the coordinator.

SCHEDULE INFORMATION

Courses are generally short-term and completed in one semester. The role includes teaching daytime, evening, and weekend classes, either live online and/or in-person at Harper College Main Campus (Palatine) or Harper College Learning and Career Center (Prospect Heights). Whether a class will run depends on enrollment.
