Position Highlights

The Department of Environmental Science is accepting applications for a Community Outreach Assistant III to help create and pilot a national model of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education in the San Carlos community.

The Community Outreach Assistant III is being hired to engage with adults and 8th-12th grade students through program recruitment, informal education, promotion, and relationship-building within the partnering communities. Key highlights of the position include establishing trusting relationships with community members, act as a liaison between the community and laboratory, recruit educators and youth, build relationships with local youth organizations, participate in planning networking meetings, and public events, and assist with the facilitation of community/youth advisory boards.

The department of Environmental Science seeks a motivated individual who is dedicated to community and partnership building, with knowledge of and/or experience in environmental, health, and/or art education, who are trusted within the partnering community, share similar social backgrounds or life experiences with the partnering community, have strong communication skills, and are enthusiastic about working with community members, building human capacity and education. Candidate will need to reside in or near the San Carlos Apache Reservation.

This program is funded by the National Institute of Health and the science education objectives include understanding: (1) how advisory boards can foster the development of critical thinking and communication skills; (2) how a summer certification program (rooted in environmental science, community science and visual art) can increase science and environmental health literacy (EHL); (3) how a community-driven approach to data sharing strategies can build a participant's EHL; and (4) how to successfully broaden participation in STEAM learning by historically underrepresented individuals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recruit adults and youth for the community and youth advisory boards and environmental science certification programs.
  • Recruitment activities include: (1) presenting to local schools, youth organizations, and government, (2) attending community fairs and other public events to inform the community, and (3) working with local leaders to increase access to information and project promotion.
  • Facilitate the participation of local adults and youth in the community and youth advisory boards and environmental science certification programs and provide ongoing follow-up and connections throughout the project with participants.
  • Inform and actively participate in the design of environmental science and art summer certification programs.
  • May assist in teaching an educational module.
  • Will assist with survey administration as well as formative, summative, and program evaluation.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with local schools, youth organizations, and government.
  • Assist with the facilitation of the youth and community advisory boards.
  • Participate in networking meetings.
  • Reduce stigma and other barriers to science by providing culturally/linguistically competent and reliable information to community members.
  • Attend and participate in project planning meetings.
  • Maintain a log of all activities and properly document observations on a provided iPad or laptop using Microsoft office and google services.
  • Develop an ongoing list of partners to engage and ensure the success of the Science Partnership Award.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strength in promoting and recruiting people of all ages for the program.
  • Be a member of the partnering community.
  • Comfortable engaging adults and 12-18 years old in science and art education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the partnering community, e.g., community connectedness, idiosyncrasies, etc. Comfortable with engaging local leaders and educators.
  • Strong public presentation skills.
  • Basic computer skills and information technology skills (i.e., laptops, smartphones, and internet/online application systems).

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

FLSA: Non-Exempt
