About the Job

Coordinate projects and day-to-day operations of the Comparative Pathology Shared Resource lab (CPSR) in collaboration with the CPSR director. This includes but is not limited to gross pathology/necropsy, histology, immunohistochemistry, and digital imaging, etc.

1) Mostly working independently, the coordinator is generally responsible for keeping processes moving in a productive direction. Responsibilities include:
i) Working closely with CPSR pathologists, participate in and take lead in the following laboratory research activities:
(1) Trim, process, embed and cut tissue sections (frozen and FFPE).
(2) Perform routine H&E and special histochemical stains.
(3) Prepare immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) slides/preparations for markers of interest.
b) Prepare digitally scanned slides and, as directed by a study pathologist, perform digital image analysis.
c) Necropsy animals and collect tissues for analysis.
d) Prepare digital images (with appropriate editing in Photoshop) to document gross, radiographic, or histological findings, and for use in publications, presentations and/or posters.
e) Collaborate with study pathologist on the generation of methods and results sections for the use in publications, presentations, and/or posters.
f) Assume responsibility for organizing pathology aspects of complex studies (e.g., carcinogenicity studies) including necropsy planning, tissue blocking schemes, project-specific histological and IHC/IF preparations, study data generation, analysis and reporting, and archiving project specimens and reports.
g) Perform data analysis and preparation of reports.
h) Review the literature in support of all activities described above (55% effort)

2) Coordinate CPSR projects and day-to-day operation of the CPSR Lab. Responsibilities include:
a) Prepare SOPs to facilitate appropriate tracking of samples and slides.
b) Maintain CPSR online storage including detailed procedure summaries for immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques.
c) Maintain documentation of key CPSR metrics, list of IHC markers, CPSR investigators, and update specific documents as needed.
d) Maintain lab notebook with daily log of activities.
e) Assure histology blocks and slides are correctly labeled (including block/slide correlation), and transfer/return to investigators is documented).
f) Perform additional quality control as directed/needed. (15% effort)

3) Maintain project logs, submission forms, CPSR server, and generate weekly project report for lab meetings to establish priorities within the lab and track status of projects. Assure documentation, terminology and paperwork is correct for projects including tissues, blocks and slides, and that these are filed/stored appropriately in the lab so they are easily accessible. Communicate with investigators regarding their specific projects; maintain updated lists of investigators for communication. (15% effort)

4) Input CPSR charges on a monthly basis. Order routine supplies for lab, and reconcile purchasing card when needed. In consultation with director, order equipment for lab as appropriate. Review budget statements when received from accounting and inform lab director of any concerns. (10% effort)

5) Lab safety and compliance: Ensure laboratory and staff are in compliance with all University Environmental Health and Safety requirements (including appropriate hazardous waste disposal). Maintain employee training records. Lab maintenance/equipment: Ensure normal maintenance and function of lab and all equipment. Maintain log of equipment service contracts. (5% effort)

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least six years of relevant pathology / histology laboratory experience or Ph.D. plus at least four years of research experience.
  • Experience with tissue sectioning/staining (both H&E and special stains), immunohistochemistry, and preparation of frozen sections.
  • Computer experience.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Histotechnology certification with 3+ years of experience in a veterinary or animal-sample based histology laboratory.
  • Ph.D. with additional years of laboratory research experience that includes a substantial morphological component employing advanced histological and immunohistochemical/immunofluorescent techniques
