General Position Description: Provides specialized student services for international students. Responsible for F & J student status compliance, academic, and personal advising, programming and facilitation, promotion of social and cultural activities, and helping to create opportunities for student engagement within the college and the community. Collaborates with other college staff to support international students.

Flexible Work Arrangement: Majority/Primarily On-site: Employee performs the majority of job duties on-site, but may occasionally work remotely.

Description of Job Function:

  1. Provides incoming F and J visa students with pre-arrival information, designs orientation content, and coordinates new student orientation programs.
  2. Supports students with course selection, registration, drop and add, graduation, transfer procedures, and scholarship information.
  3. Advises international students in F and J status on federal regulations. Services as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  4. Provides and issues I-20s (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status) and DS-2019s (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status) for students.
  5. Processes and maintains student records in SEVIS, institutional databases, and student files.
  6. Coordinates the implementation, maintenance, and procedures for accurate and timely reporting to comply with immigration regulations and SEVIS reporting requirements. Prepares periodic reports on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies.
  7. Provides academic advising as it relates to educational programs, including managing students on academic probation. Serves as liaison between the students and faculty and assists students having academic difficulty in utilizing all available resources.
  8. Advises students on personal concerns. Makes appropriate referrals and contacts, and assists students when emergencies arise.
  9. Maintains regular contact with students including but not limited to emails, phone conversations, and appointments.
  10. Promotes social and cultural events designed to integrate students into the college community and supports the college's internationalization efforts to provide intercultural opportunities for the college's domestic students. Helps to create opportunities for student engagement within the college and the community.
  11. Liaises with various college departments and government agencies, including but not limited to the Internship Services, Business Office, Academic Departments, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Department of State.
  12. Assists in training internal DSO's and ARO's throughout the college and stays abreast of F & J visas federal regulations.
  13. Supports department leadership with monitoring and evaluating processes.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution, or any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions.

Other Required Qualifications: Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident as specified by Federal regulations.

Preferred Type of Experience: Experience in providing academic F and J status advising to college or university students.
International experience that may include studying, living or working abroad, or interacting with international students.
Experience working in a college or university providing advising, orientation and programming for international students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of SEVIS and F status regulations as outlined in 8 C.F.R. § 21 2(f).
  2. Ability to interpret J status regulations as outlined in 22 C.F.R. § 6 2
  3. Knowledge of the principles of student advising and student development theory.
  4. Skill in the use of personal computers and general office software, including database programs and advanced spreadsheet applications.
  5. Ability to effectively communicate interpersonally, orally, and in writing.
  6. Ability to research related information and regulations, prepare reports and documents, and attend to details with a high level of accuracy.
  7. Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to dynamic environments while maintaining accuracy.
  8. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  9. Ability to travel between campuses

General Working Conditions: This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
