Job Summary
As a Student Success Advisor (SSA) you will assist the Student Engagement, Experience, & Achievement (SEEA) office to create a welcoming and engaging environment that supports student success. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for SEEA, you will support both a cohort of students and general students who are navigating academic challenges. You will be responsible for coordinating and conducting proactive advising and student support services to help students persist in their program of study. SSA provides services which include advising, academic progress review, and working with other staff and faculty on retention efforts for students who are navigating academic challenges. This includes assisting students in creating a success plan that addresses academic, financial, career, and personal goals.
Moreover, as the SSC you will support students with their experience at the college with exposure to engagement opportunities to foster a sense of belonging as well as helping students navigate policies, processes, and procedures pertaining to their academics. As the SSA you will actively work to build rapport, connect students with college and community resources, identify and mitigate challenges and barriers, and provide support that leads to persistence/retention and successful completion. As the SSA you will use MySuccess (Starfish) to document interactions, make referrals, respond to flags and proactively care for students in a collaborative manner through an intensive outreach approach. You will also use other retention data research and analysis; the goal is to identify obstacles to student achievement and retention.
As the SSA you will assist with programming, educational workshops, celebratory events, facilitating focus/discussion groups for students and other SEEA and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) staff responsibilities. Additionally, as the SSA you will facilitate leadership development opportunities in supervising and mentoring student leaders. This position may also supervise a part-time professional staff member. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in student development theory and has experience in employing high impact practices. They are dedicated to student success and fluent in the use of data to guide work and tell a compelling story. The candidate demonstrates exceptional communication skills by using multiple modalities and works independently as well as collaboratively. They also promote innovative ideas on how to reach and engage students.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Student development theory, including leadership development.
- Understanding of family dynamics.
- Informed trauma-care.
- Assessment and using qualitative and quantitative data to guide work, measure success, and tell a compelling story.
- High impact practices and other ways to engage students and support student success.
- Best practices to enhance the persistence, retention, and success of unique student experiences.
Skills to:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational skills and time management skills.
- Proficiency using case management software.
Ability to:
- Work at least 40 hours a week between the hours of 8 am to 6 pm (may need to adjust hours based on student and office needs). Also, may be asked to work outside allotted hours and weekends due to campus engagement initiatives.
- Work from various campus locations.
- Communicate effectively in multiple modalities.
- Ability to handle high-stress situations calmy and effectively.
- Work independently and collaborative to support student success.
- Work with campus and community partners to develop, support, market, and host motivational and educational activities, workshops, programs, and conferences that create a sense of community, educate students, and support student retention, persistence and graduation.
- Serve as a mentor, advocate, and resource for students.
- Promote innovative ideas on how to reach and engage students.
- Assist students in developing student success action plans that include career, academic, financial and personal goals.
- Evaluate and identify trends, recommendations or areas for improvement in the delivery of services to students.
- In collaboration with others, participate in planning and hosting student outreach activities.
- Work closely with supervisor to contribute to college-wide committees, task forces, and other specific initiatives related to student retention and success.
- Maintain student files and ensure confidentiality of student records.
- Demonstrate empathy and non-judgmental attitude.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Two (2) years related full-time equivalent paid related work experience.
Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field.
Experience working in a higher education environment, particularly multi-campus, community college, and/or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI).
Bilingual or multilingual.
Experience supervising part-time staff and student leaders.
