Job Summary
The TRIO Veterans Student Support Services (VSSS) Program at Salt Lake Community College supports veteran students as they navigate and succeed in higher education. The VSSS Program Coordinator provides critical operational, communication, and programming support to ensure the program runs smoothly and participants remain actively engaged.
Under the direction of the TRIO VSSS Project Director, the Coordinator is responsible for organizing program activities, managing outreach and communications, coordinating events and workshops, supporting peer mentor operations, and maintaining program documentation. This role complements the VSSS Advisor, who provides individualized case management and academic advising to program participants.
This position works closely with campus partners, Veterans Services, and community organizations to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for veteran students and their families.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Outreach, Recruitment & Communication
- Develop and execute a year-round communication plan using text, email, social media, Canvas, and Campus Groups to keep participants informed and engaged
- Recruit eligible veteran students into the VSSS program through classroom visits, information tables, orientations, and partnerships with Veterans Services, VITAL, and community organizations
- Create and distribute program marketing materials, including flyers, newsletters, and digital content
- Maintain and update the VSSS program website and social media presence
- Serve as an initial point of contact for prospective participants and facilitate warm handoffs to the VSSS Advisor for intake and advising
Events, Workshops & Programming
- Plan, organize, and coordinate VSSS events, including the VSSS Student Summit, cultural events, campus visits to four-year institutions, FAFSA completion events, Scholarship Day, and TRIO Day celebrations
- Coordinate workshop logistics, including scheduling, space reservations, presenter coordination, supplies, and participant communications
- Support the planning and execution of career exploration activities, transfer workshops, financial literacy workshops, and service projects
- Collaborate with campus partners and community organizations to deliver relevant programming for veteran students and their families
Peer Mentor Coordination
- Assist with recruitment, hiring, training, and daily supervision of part-time peer mentors
- Coordinate peer mentor schedules, assignments, and weekly check-ins
- Support the development of the Veteran SSS Peer Leadership Team, including training in departmental procedures, veteran sensitivity, and tutoring best practices
- Monitor peer mentor engagement with participants and provide feedback to the Project Director
Program Administration & Data Support
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records in the VSSS I-Drive database, StudentAccess, and other institutional systems
- Track event attendance, service contacts, and participation data to support program reporting
- Assist the Project Director with the preparation of the Annual Performance Report (APR) and other required federal documentation
- Support budget tracking for supplies, events, and program activities
- Ensure the VSSS office and student spaces are organized, welcoming, and stocked with necessary materials
Minimum qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor's degree, and
- Two (2) years of professional experience in education, student services, event coordination, communications, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with veteran students, TRIO programs, or underserved student populations
- Military service or direct experience with the military/veteran community
- Experience with event planning, outreach, or student programming in a higher education setting
