Corporate Communications Manager

At the University of Hull, we’ve been inspiring people to think differently and achieve extraordinary things for almost 100 years. As a university driven by a strong sense of purpose, we pride ourselves on academic excellence, cutting‑edge facilities and the opportunities we offer staff and students to help tackle the biggest global challenges. From pioneering clean energy solutions and enhancing flood resilience, to advancing cancer research, driving improvements in wound care and leading the fight against modern slavery, our work is shaping a better, fairer and more sustainable future.

We believe in the power of education to transform lives. Our approach is hands‑on and personalised, empowering everyone in our community to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to thrive. We are equally proud to be part of the city of Hull — a place renowned for its warmth, resilience and ambition. Working together, the University and the city continue to grow, enabling people, organisations and industries locally, nationally and globally to flourish.

Our Corporate Communications team is expanding as we evolve our identity, strengthen our brand and amplify our story across diverse audiences and channels. We work collaboratively across the institution and beyond, championing the University’s achievements and ensuring our purpose and impact are clearly understood.

We are now seeking an experienced Corporate Communications Manager to play a pivotal role in shaping, promoting and safeguarding the University’s reputation. This is an exciting opportunity for a communications professional who thrives in fast‑paced environments, enjoys building meaningful relationships and excels at translating complex information into compelling narratives.

About the role

As Corporate Communications Manager, you will lead the development and delivery of comprehensive communication plans aligned to our strategic priorities. You will build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and national and international media contacts, ensuring our stories are shared widely, accurately and with impact.

The role holder is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication plans to support the University's strategic objectives and fostering strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Candidates should have exceptional communication, leadership, relationship building and project management skills – and have previous experience working closely with media contacts across national publications, as well as managing critical incidents with speed, accuracy and professionalism.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating activity across multiple communications disciplines, and contributing to cross‑University campaigns.
  • Overseeing the work of a Corporate Communications Specialist, providing guidance and elevating issues as appropriate.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with local, national and international media; pitching stories, arranging interviews and managing enquiries.
  • Leading the University’s response to critical incidents, working closely with senior leaders and members of the Rapid Response Team.
  • Providing insight, strategic counsel and reputational advice to senior colleagues regarding opportunities, issues and sector developments.
  • Supporting colleagues across the University by offering expert advice on communications, reputational risk and sharing information effectively.
  • Delivering training and guidance on media engagement and supporting colleagues to improve their communications confidence and capability.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on media coverage and stakeholder engagement, using insights to drive continuous improvement.
  • Supporting University events, including open days, with occasional weekend commitments.
  • Providing out‑of‑hours cover when required.
