Position Summary:
The counselor education unit in the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Higher Education (CEH) at Central Michigan University is now accepting applications for a 10-month, full-time tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate rank in counselor education, effective August 2026 (or January 2026, if available to start earlier). This is an in-person position based on CMU’s main campus in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all students and to an environment that acknowledges, encourages, respects, and celebrates diversity and differences. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The CMU Counseling Program is an award-winning CACREP-accredited counseling program, with concentrations in addiction, clinical mental health, and school counseling. We currently offer a hybrid program on our main campus and a fully online program (both part- and full-time options). We are seeking a counselor educator who has completed education in a CACREP-accredited doctoral program to teach both on main campus (Mount Pleasant, MI) and online (both synchronous and asynchronous formats). This individual must have a strong professional counseling identity demonstrated by clinical experience and active licensure/credentialing as a counselor. Summer teaching opportunities may also be available.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Counselor Education, from a CACREP-accredited institution (ABD may be considered only if application includes written documentation from Dissertation or Program Chair of completion date by start date).
- Post-graduate professional clinical and/or school counseling experience.
- Professional counseling license and/or a school counseling license or certification; or license eligible as a professional counselor or school counselor in Michigan.
- Understanding and demonstrated knowledge and implementation of the multicultural and social justice competencies in counseling.
- Willingness to assist as a team member in the program’s implementation and ongoing review of CACREP standards.
- Demonstrated commitment to advocacy and service to the counseling profession.
- Professional counseling identity, including membership in ACA or other professional counseling associations.
- Scholarship agenda that outlines plans for peer reviewed publications.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Assistant Professor
- Teaching experience in a face-to-face and/or online environment.
- Clinical experience outside of practica/internships.
- Interest in leadership at the programmatic level.
- Demonstrated competence in teaching using various modalities (e.g., face-to-face, synchronous online, asynchronous online, hyflex/hybrid).
- Demonstrated competence in teaching using various learning management systems and technologies.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional counseling organizations at the local, state, national and/or international level through active membership or leadership.
- Experience with program evaluation and data collection, or a willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated involvement with the CACREP accreditation process.
- Demonstrated scholarship (e.g., journal articles, grants, books, or book chapters).
- History of leadership at the department/program level or demonstrated willingness to take on leadership roles such as concentration coordinator, program director, or clinical experiences coordinator.

About the Department:
The Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Higher Education is housed within the College of Education & Human Services. The Counseling Program offers three CACREP accredited concentration areas of study: Addiction, Clinical Mental Health, and School Counseling. At present, the program has approximately 400 students total between main campus and the cohort online program, and ten (10) full-time faculty members. The CMU Program faculty and staff have received a variety of awards in social justice, teaching, and clinical supervision from the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors and CMU. The program was the recipient of the 2023 NCACES Outstanding Innovative Counselor Education Program Award.
