**Essential Functions:**

The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we enrolled over 12,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 8% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 17% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a college dedicated to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Students at Madera Community College, the Counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities, which include the following:
  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling;
  • Assist and collaborate in developing student support services;
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
  • Assist students with major selection, developing student education plans (SEPs), aligned with their educational goals and career pathways;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Guided Pathways, and the Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
  • Work collaboratively with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provision of counseling in support of guided pathways and other programs, including but not limited to first year experience programs;
  • Assist, as needed, with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities;
  • Provide assistance and referrals to on/off campus resources and student support services including Admissions & Records, EOPS, CalWORKs, Career/Transfer & Employment Center, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Academic Success Centers, TRiO, and off-campus community resources;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
  • Providing assistance to new and prospective students with college applications and college orientation;
  • Assist and maintain program website to ensure information is current and accessible to students;
  • Develop and teach counseling courses such as career planning, academic success and college introduction;
  • Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, state, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Provide counseling services, as needed, during days, evenings, and weekends possibly at MCC, Oakhurst Campus and off-site locations;
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students;
  • Participate in the accreditation process;
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Develop and/or utilize technologies for classroom presentations;
  • Participate in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
  • Work with colleagues within and beyond the discipline to implement the guided pathways concept to promote student success and completion;
  • Participate in student recruitment activities;
  • Serve on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Work assignments and provide services in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, and on-line or off-campus as needed;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom;
**AND**
  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;
  • **OR**
  • A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees **and** a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline;
  • **OR**
  • A valid California Community College Credential;
  • **OR**
  • The equivalent education and/or experience **(requires an equivalency).**

  • A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.
**Desirable Qualifications:**
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Experience with counseling and advising;
  • Experience developing Student Education Plans;
  • Knowledge of the student experiences and the strategies to ensure retention, persistence, and completion of educational goals;
  • Experience with advising students on the requirements for Associate degrees and Associate Degree for Transfer and general education patterns for both CSU & UC;
  • Experience participating in outreach, recruitment and matriculation activities;
  • Demonstrated understanding of Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Guided Pathways, and/or other student success initiatives;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies;
  • Commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with instructors, and other colleagues;
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed;
  • Capacity to contribute to the total operation of Student Services including Department, Division, and College responsibilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning;
  • Ability to use current educational technology methods and tools;
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing;
  • Memberships in professional organizations;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
**Conditions of Employment:**
178-181 duty days per year. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment.
**Salary and Benefits:**
Annual starting salary is $71,054 - $108,773 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher's Retirement System (CalSTRS).
**Selection Procedure:**
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness **and** to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the "recommended candidates". These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
