Counselor
Job Summary
Primary role of Counselor is to provide mental health counseling to enrolled students to promote their emotional well-being and academic success. This position involves providing confidential counseling services to students facing mental health challenges, offering therapeutic support for a variety of personal, academic, and emotional issues, and fostering mental health awareness on campus. Additionally, this role includes delivering disability support services, ensuring that students with disabilities receive necessary accommodation and support to succeed in their educational goals.
Essential Functions
- Mental Health Counseling: Provides in-person and telemental health counseling services to registered students, including intake assessments/triage, individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis intervention. Manages an ongoing caseload of student clients and uses clinical interpretation of student needs to inform method, scope, and duration of services provided, utilizing departmental stepped-care model. Uses electronic health record to complete thorough and timely documentation related to provision of clinical services, in strict adherence to legal and ethical standards pertaining to mental health counseling. Conducts workshops, events, and educational programs to reduce stigma and foster mental health awareness. Connects students to off-campus mental health and community services, as needed.
- Disability Support Services: Conducts individualized intake meetings with students requesting accommodations to gather information related to their disability, access barriers, and accessibility needs. Reviews and evaluates disability-related documentation to support accommodation determinations. Creates and manages official accommodation notification letters to students and ensures that authorized accommodations are delivered. Consults with faculty and academic department staff to ensure ADA accommodations are provided appropriately and coaches instructors on best practices for implementing classroom accommodations. Meets with prospective students, families, and high school contacts for transition questions and preparation related to accessing disability resources at LMC. Maintains broad knowledge and awareness of various types of assistive technology, in order to recommend and demonstrate assistive technology tools and services to students with disabilities.
