Position Overview:
The BYU School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time position as Course Director for Organ Systems 3 – Circulation and Ventilation. This Phase 1 course introduces first-year medical students to the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, including their structure, function, regulation, and key pathophysiologic processes. The course emphasizes foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, integrated with clinical applications, case-based learning, and early patient relevance.
The Course Director will oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of course content in collaboration with faculty in physiology, anatomy, pathology, and related biomedical sciences, as well as the Director of Phase 1. The ideal candidate is a basic scientist with deep expertise in cardiovascular and/or respiratory systems, and a demonstrated commitment to student-centered medical education.
Required Degree:
PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) in physiology, biomedical sciences, or a closely related field
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in cardiovascular or pulmonary systems and their regulation
- Strong record of teaching in undergraduate, graduate, or medical education (UME) settings
- Experience with active learning, team-based learning, or case-based instructional methods
- Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading integrated or interdisciplinary courses in medical or health professions programs
- Record of scholarship in cardiovascular or pulmonary physiology or medical education
- Familiarity with instructional technology, digital platforms, or AI-enhanced teaching methods
- Experience in curriculum design, course coordination, or academic program assessment
Duties/Expectations:
Teaching and Instruction:
- Deliver course content using clinically integrated, student-centered pedagogies
- Facilitate active learning sessions focused on cardiovascular and respiratory function, regulation, and clinical relevance
- Support student understanding of foundational scientific and clinical concepts in circulation and ventilation
Administrative Leadership:
- Lead course planning, scheduling, assessment development, and integration with adjacent organ system blocks
- Collaborate with faculty colleagues to ensure alignment with institutional learning outcomes and LCME standards
- Coordinate with the Phase 1 Director and participate in course evaluation and continuous improvement
Scholarship and Innovation:
- Engage in research or scholarly work in relevant content areas or medical education
- Share innovations in teaching, assessment, or integration through presentations and peer-reviewed publications
- Contribute to curricular innovation and educational best practices
Service and Outreach:
- Participate in medical school committees, service assignments, and faculty development programs
- Mentor students and support the values and mission of the BYU School of Medicine
