Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is seeking an experienced creative professional for the role of Creative and Brand Manager. This position is responsible for brand management, art, and creative production oversight to support an array of branded materials, including magazines, websites, and other visual assets. The position is part of a broader creative design team and provides guidance and resources for other offices, departments, and programs across a school/division. The position liaises with counterparts across the Johns Hopkins community.
This role will be responsible for oversight of the use of University-wide brand guidelines, art, and graphic design work for Carey Business School to support an array of branded materials, including magazines, websites, and other visual assets. Directly reporting to the Manager will be a small team of experienced Graphic Designers (full-time and casual). The successful candidate will have a strong graphic design background and a portfolio of their work available for review.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Branding
- Oversee enforcement and adoption of University-wide brand guidelines that encompass logo architecture, typography, color, licensing and use-of-name.
- Work in collaboration with University Communications brand team and Johns Hopkins Brand Ambassadors to uphold and influence evolution of University-wide guidelines.
- Lead the development and evolution of the school’s visual identity guidelines based on university standards to strengthen brand and support a balance of consistency and flexibility.
- Create, evolve, and help foster adoption of self-serve brand toolkits and templates.
- Provide guidance and consultation on logo use, fonts and other brand elements for the broader design team.
- Work closely with branding leads across Johns Hopkins to understand their guidelines, direction, and resources and translate for respective needs.
- Work collaboratively to advise and consult on art, photography, and branding needs including budgets and vendors.
- Advise on branding needs and questions.
- Consult on and oversee major original visual assets.
Art Direction
- Art direct and/or consult on all materials needing custom illustrations, print and digital, creating iterations for different channels and platforms.
- Ensure illustrations reflect a commitment to Hopkins values.
- Identify, contract, and oversee freelance illustrators as needed and manage associated budgets.
- Provide design feedback and advice to other graphic designers on the design team; advise on brand consistency, concept, execution, and production.
- Create production schedules for print and related projects.
- Manage all aspects of print projects from inception to completion.
- Develop and manage budgets and expenses, including establishing rate structures.
Creative Production Oversight
- Direct art and design elements of various mediums, to include graphic design, photography, digital art, animation, or video.
- Serve in a lead design role on cross-functional teams to ensure that print and digital design work is of highest quality, consistent, and supports the goals of the project, as needed.
- Create a wide range of visual materials, e.g. logos, signage, annual reports, ads, publications, branded collateral, social media graphics, event promotions, image creation, and motion graphics, as needed.
- May direct photo shoots and illustration assignments.
- Work on multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines and following schedules.
- May supervise, coach and develop a small team of creative staff to include full-time, casual or contract staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
This role will also
- Serve in a lead design role on cross-functional teams to ensure that print and digital design work is of highest quality, consistent, and supports the goals of the project, as needed.
- Create a wide range of visual materials, e.g. logos, signage, annual reports, ads, publications, branded collateral, social media graphics, event promotions, image creation, and motion graphics, as needed.
- Direct photo shoots and illustration assignments.
- Work on multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines and following schedules.
- Supervise, coach and develop a small team of creative staff to include a full time graphic designer and several casual or contract staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- Four years of related experience and a portfolio.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- Communications, marketing and branding experience.
- Experience in design for academic or scientific institutions.
- Advanced understanding and use of Adobe Creative Cloud: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop.
- Proficiency in project management software, specifically Smartsheet.
- Experience with Marq.
- Portfolio of graphic design available for review.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
- Expert knowledge of methods, procedures, techniques and media available for visual branding, art, and photography.
