Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice, housed at Berkeley Law, works to establish equity and fairness in the marketplace. Through research, advocacy, policy, and teaching, the Center strives to develop and apply robust consumer protection laws in places and among people where those laws haven't been used before, and to create a society in which economic, racial, and social justice are available to all. The Center believes that building economic justice means developing and enforcing laws that fight fraud and deception, that protect low-income communities and communities of color, and that promote financial security and empowerment. Our activities always highlight the interests and experiences of vulnerable consumers, including immigrants, survivors of domestic violence & elder abuse, people impacted by the criminal legal system, and others.

Position Summary

The Administration & Communications Associate will join the creative and dynamic team at the UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice and engage in the full range of the Center's projects. The position's focus is administering the Center's communications - namely the Center's website, social media channels, reports, podcast series, and related projects - under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Center's team of staff, faculty advisors, and law student fellows. The position also involves performing general administrative services and helping to manage the operations of the Center, including activities in financial processing and reporting, general communications, liaising with students, staff, faculty, campus departments, external partners; and general program administration and support.

Responsibilities

Communications:

  • Under guidance from Center staff, provides general communications support and assists with producing written, visual, and electronic materials.
  • Maintains Center's listservs by managing a contact database.
  • Implements website updates and ensures that the Center's web presence is optimized and current.
  • Administers the Center's social media accounts and publishes content primarily generated by Center colleagues and faculty.
  • Provides support for communications projects (podcast series, video series, newsletters, reports) and implements production in coordination with Center staff, Berkeley Law Communications staff, faculty, students, external partners, and vendors.
  • Resolves technological challenges in coordination with Information Security & Technology (IS&T) and other various departments to keep information accurate, timely and flowing between students, faculty, alumni/friends and the school.

General administrative support:

  • Provides additional operational and program support.
  • Assists with the day-to-day coordination and general administrative operations of the Center.
  • Serves as an administrative point of contact for the center when necessary and responds to administrative inquiries; liaises with IT/Media/Facilities/Communications/Event Services/Business Services/Finance/central campus departments on project-related tasks.
  • Responds to requests for information and ensures that records and information are current and accurate
  • Directs inquiries beyond own scope of expertise to appropriate staff or office(s)
  • Assists with managing the Center's information. Produces documents, reports, and analysis of programs as required. Maintains a system for capturing and tracking institutional memory.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Financial Administration:

  • Processes financial transactions and functions as a resource on issues such as escalated customer service programs, complex financial discrepancies, and vendors.
  • Processes business transactions including invoices and reimbursements, and researches and resolves vendor issues as required.
  • Researches and makes recommendations on suitable vendors.
  • Authorizes minor expenditures in consultation with supervisor and in accordance with project budgets and policy.
  • Assists with travel arrangements for invited speakers, staff, and students.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state fiscal requirements and internal campus policies, and makes recommendations to maintain compliance as necessary.
  • Participates in the development and revision of the centers' operating procedures and guidelines as relevant.

Event coordination and support:

  • Offers general event support, including staffing events and completing discrete event-related tasks as needed.
  • Supports and coordinates meeting and event logistics to ensure that room reservations, catering, materials preparation, and outreach to appropriate constituents are executed accordingly.
  • Liaises with the Business Services Office, Event Services Unit, and other departments at Berkeley Law, as well as external constituents (if any), when planning and executing events.
  • Assists with creating promotional materials (e.g. flyers) and publicizing Center events.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, students, faculty, alumni, and external business partners and collaborators from varied academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as website management, finance and accounting, and project management.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office, Google Suite, online calendaring systems, and video conference platforms; Ability to learn new computer systems and software systems.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening or weekend events.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that promotes collaboration and mutual respect among all members of the UC Berkeley community and its stakeholders.
  • Prior administrative and/or office management experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in social justice and/or public interest law.
  • Facility with social media.
  • Familiarity with web design.
  • Knowledge of graphic design software (Adobe Suite, Canva, etc.).

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.93 (Step 3) - $37.11 (Step 7).

  • (40 hours/week), temporary position with the possibility of extension.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
