Position Purpose:
Reporting to the chairs of the Departments of Economics, Government and Quantitative Social Sciences, the Data Scientist working in the Social Science Data and Computation Lab at Dartmouth College serves as an integral member of the academic community. This individual provides expertise in data science and statistical analysis, supports faculty and students in their original research projects using data analysis tools such as Stata, R, and Python, and collaborates with researchers within the social sciences to advance the university's research initiatives.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp: Masters or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Graduate degree in data science, economics, political science, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Applicants with a BA or BS and experience or evidence of relevant skills will also be considered.
- Proven experience in a research setting with a track record of contributing to original research projects.
- Proficiency in one or more of the following areas: statistical analysis, data modelling, and machine learning techniques, with command of Stata and R.
- Strong communication and collaborative skills and the ability to liaise with faculty and students from diverse academic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with academic research processes and the ethical considerations associated with data analysis and dissemination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within a university or academic research environment.
- Knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques.
- Familiarity with Python.
- Familiarity with GIS tools.
- Familiarity with applying emerging artificial intelligence tools, especially large language models, to social science problems.

- Instruction: Conduct short workshops to familiarize (or potentially refamiliarize) undergraduate students in the social sciences with the basic use of statistical software. Percentage Of Time: 10
- Maintain Expertise: Stay informed about emerging trends and advancements in data science and statistical analysis and contribute to the development of best practices for research-related data management and analysis. Percentage Of Time: 5
