"Dean - College of Environmental Design"

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Environmental Design (CED). Since its founding in 1959, CED has achieved distinction for integrating architecture, planning, and landscape design with a focus on environmental and social justice in the built environment. Ranked #1 for Architecture and the Built Environment among public universities by QS World University Rankings, CED emphasizes theory, research, innovation, and practice in the built environment, with attention to design excellence, climate solutions, and new materials and technologies.

The dean will lead CED, which includes 211 renowned faculty, committed staff, over 1,200 talented and diverse students, and nearly 24,000 distinguished alumni. The role involves fostering collaborations among scholars, practitioners, students, and stakeholders to unite various approaches to environmental design. The dean must navigate public university complexities, advocate for CED and UC Berkeley, uphold shared governance, and balance teaching, research, and practice priorities centered on design excellence.

Key responsibilities include:

• Inspiring and executing an integrative vision that builds on CED's identity, fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, and supports UC Berkeley's mission.
• Growing and stewarding resources to achieve CED's ambitions.
• Strengthening operational infrastructure and supporting faculty and staff recruitment and retention.
• Promoting an equitable learning environment and student success.
• Serving as a visible intellectual leader to elevate CED's reputation locally, nationally, and internationally.

Applicants must have a terminal degree and merit a tenured appointment as a full professor. The salary range is $239,600 - $611,100, with a minimum expected salary of $375,000. The position starts on July 1, 2026. Applications are reviewed starting August 20, 2025, with a final date of October 3, 2025.
