Peru State, the first college in Nebraska, was founded in 1867 to educate men and women who wanted to become teachers. In the 156 years since, the College has always kept the education of teacher-candidates close to its heart.
Now a vibrant and well-rounded liberal-arts college, Peru State values the impressive heritage of its School of Education. But the School is not resting on its laurels. Recent innovations include the TELL Lab, a highly flexible classroom designed to help students practice their craft in the environments they will find when they start teaching, Project REACH (Raising Education Awareness Creating Hope), which is the School’s “future teacher academy,” and many more.
The new Dean for the School of Education will continue its legacy of vision, energy, passion, and dedication to student success. This is an exciting time for Peru State College and its School of Education, and the next Dean will shape the School’s future in bold and creative ways.
Responsibilities:
The Dean provides leadership for a strong School of Education with a rich tradition of preparing teacher candidates and professionals in sport and exercise science. The School is home to 15 faculty and four staff members who, working with content-area faculty in two other Schools, serve more than 600 students in elementary, secondary, special education, and health/exercise science programs, in addition to the Master of Science in Education degree.
Examples of work performed:
- Establish a vision for the School that embraces innovation, high quality educational outcomes, enrollment growth, and student retention.
- Draw on assessment and program-evaluation strategies to make data-driven decisions and create proposals for program enhancement.
- Develop strong working relationships and formal partnerships with a wide variety of internal and external constituencies.
- Maintain expertise in institutional and program-specific accreditation and state requirements, and lead relevant review and reporting processes.
- Meet with and advise existing and prospective students.
- Recommend, supervise, mentor, evaluate, and formally develop faculty and staff.
- Manage the department’s budget and office procedures.
- Actively participate in College recruiting efforts and campus events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
A key leader on campus, the Dean will be known for professionalism and a collaborative/accessible style. The successful candidate will articulate a genuine commitment to Peru State’s open-enrollment mission and engaged teaching and learning. The position requires advanced project management, formal communication, and problem solving skills, as well as the capacity for leadership at this level.
Also Required:
- Relevant doctorate.
- Qualifications to act as Unit Administrator per Nebraska’s requirements for teacher education programs (must hold, qualify for, or have held an educator certificate).
- Significant teaching experience in public schools and/or higher education.
- Experience and/or interest in increasing student success and engagement, particularly of underrepresented students.
Strongly Preferred:
- Significant leadership experience in public and/or higher education.
- Program assessment and development experience, including portfolio planning, standardized testing and data evaluation experience.
- Significant alternative course format and/or online teaching experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience generating and accommodating enrollment growth.
- Deep understanding of technology trends and applications.
- Prior experience with NCATE/TEAC/CAEP standards and accrediting processes, or similar experience.
