POSITION DETAILS

The College of Staten Island (CSI), a comprehensive senior college of The City University of New York, seeks an experienced, creative, and collaborative leader to assume the position of Dean of the School of Education and Social Work.

The Dean of the School of Education and Social Work provides academic and administrative leadership for the undergraduate and graduate programs in the School, including Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education, Adolescence Education, TESOL, Special Education in Childhood and Adolescence, Post-Master's Advanced Certificate for Leadership in Education, Teachers on Sabbatical, MSW and BSSW programs. The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Provost's Council.

Specific responsibilities of the position include the following:

The Dean provides strategic, academic, and administrative leadership, reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serving as a key member of the Provost’s Council.

  • Program Development and Innovation-Lead the School in developing new, forward-looking programs that respond to the rapidly changing needs of education and social work, including the integration of technology, culturally responsive pedagogy, and workforce-aligned credentials. Encourage interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaboration to design programs that prepare graduates for emerging roles in teaching, leadership, and community engagement. Advance online, hybrid, and experiential learning pathways that expand access and enhance student success.
  • Strategic Leadership and Growth-Lead strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts for the School, aligning goals with college and university priorities. Foster sustainable program growth, enrollment expansion, and partnerships that position CSI as a regional and national leader in educator and social work preparation. Cultivate innovation and evidence-based practices across academic programs, field experiences, and community partnerships.
  • Academic Excellence and Accreditation-Ensure ongoing accreditation and assessment of programs, maintaining the highest academic and professional standards. Support faculty in advancing research, creative work, and grant acquisition, and in integrating innovative pedagogies that improve learning outcomes.
  • Fiscal and Operational Leadership-Manage the School’s budget and resources to support excellence, innovation, and equitable growth. Oversee faculty and staff development and provide mentorship to academic and administrative leaders within the School.
  • Community and External Partnerships-Strengthen collaborations with K–12 schools, community agencies, and educational organizations across Staten Island and the metropolitan region. Build partnerships with external stakeholders—including government, nonprofit, and industry partners—to enhance student learning opportunities, applied research, and workforce readiness. Engage alumni and donors to expand support for scholarships, innovation, and community impact.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

Preferred qualifications include:

At a minimum, the successful candidate will have:

  • An earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the School of Education.
  • A record of academic achievement requisite for a tenured senior faculty appointment in the School, preferably at the rank of full Professor.
  • A record of proven leadership and administrative experience relevant to the work of the School.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to the goals of urban, public higher education serving diverse populations.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and program assessment.
  • Excellent skills in oral, written, and interpersonal communication.

In addition, the following attributes are strongly preferred:

  • Deep knowledge of the changing climate of teacher education.
  • Demonstrated engagement with and success in obtaining federal, state, and private grants.
  • Experience in fiscal affairs, faculty and staff development, and promoting university and community relations.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in innovative partnerships and education policy development.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$180,000 - $200,000
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
