Housed within the Division of Student Affairs, New Student Programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale oversees campus-wide orientation programs for all new students, transition events, family engagement and programming, and retention initiatives. The Deputy Director provides strategic leadership, vision, and oversight for this office and all its staff, initiatives, and resources.

Examples of Duties

  1. Provide leadership and supervision of personnel, programs, and activities in New Student Programs. Provides leadership in developing programs and services to create a distinctive freshman/transfer year experience and to enhance the academic and personal development of students.
  2. Develop and plan a comprehensive orientation experience designed to meet the needs of incoming students and families. Directs, staffs, and oversees the orientation program. Administer year-round, on-campus/virtual New Student Orientation program for students and families admitted for spring, summer and fall semesters, including all program logistics, promotions, and follow-up evaluations.
  3. Ensure all students with orientation reservations complete enrollment benchmarks. Coordinate with campus departments regarding outstanding enrollment tasks and ensure completion by the end of the orientation experience.
  4. Work with University Communications and Marketing to develop mail, text/phone, and email communications plan for incoming students, to provide a seamless transition from admission to the first semester. Maintain updated and accurate content on all NSP webpages.
  5. Develop and oversee the coordination and administration of Saluki Startup/Weeks of Welcome activities for the fall and spring semesters.
  6. Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff to meet programmatic goals/objectives (full-time staff, GAs, and student employees).
  7. Serve as fiscal officer for all New Student Program accounts. Develop budget and oversee expenditures. Serve as department P-card approver.
  8. Track and report students' orientation reservation and attendance.
  9. Publish handbooks, promotional materials, brochures, planning calendars, reports, announcements, etc.
  10. Identify potential business and campus sponsors and oversee business sponsorship program. Analyze organization's needs to identify profitable sponsors. Serve as main contact for organizations and businesses.
  11. Serve as Director of Saluki Family Association, including design and publication of print materials and websites, coordination of special events including Family Weekend, and collaboration with Alumni Association.
  12. Participate in recruitment efforts of the university.
  13. Coordinate, notify, campus/community agencies regarding the New Student Programs areas, including the Division of Students Affairs, Chief Academic Advisors, Deans, Enrollment Management, Academic Units, etc.
  14. Serve as a liaison between Student Affairs and Admissions and between Student Affairs and groups offering specialized orientation programs such as those for international, multicultural, student athletes, etc.
  15. In collaboration with Institutional Research, gather essential information about new students, and communicate the resulting incoming-class data to the University community.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Eleven (11) years of progressively responsible work experience in a private or governmental organization:
    1. Eight (8) years** of which are in one or more of the following areas: new student programs, first-year experience programs, first-year seminars, student leadership training and development programs, transitional programs, student advising/mentoring programs or related areas.
    2. AND
    3. Three (3) years* supervising the work of professional staff or process with one of the above areas.

*Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the above three (3) years experience requirement.
**Master's degree may be substituted for one (1) year specialized work experience.

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
