Organizational Unit Overview:

ECU Libraries is a branch of Academic Affairs and reports through the Provost/ Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. ECU Libraries serves East Carolina University faculty, students, staff and visitors by offering library research and services to support the research, instruction and service goals of the University. ECU Libraries is comprised of Joyner Library on ECUs main campus, Laupus Library on ECUs health sciences campus, and the Music Library, located in the Fletcher Music building.

Job Duties:

ECU Libraries seeks a Digital Preservation Assistant to support the management and long-term care of digital archival materials. This role focuses primarily on maintaining digital preservation workflows, with additional responsibilities in patron support and professional development. Job duties include:

80% Digital Preservation Support

  • Workstation Maintenance: Support the operational readiness of Digital Lab workstations used in digital preservation activities, including preparation for ingest, analysis, and processing of digital archival materials.
  • File Organization and Review: Conduct regular review, organization, and normalization of files and folders within local and digital preservation environments to support established digital preservation workflows.
  • File Preservation: Assist Digital Archivist with the management of digital preservation files on workstations and the digital preservation system.
  • File Migration: Assist with migration of digital files from carrier or legacy media or local file systems to the digital preservation system.
  • Asset Organization: Organize, tag, and catalog digital files and carrier media (flash drives, floppy disks, CDs, etc.) in local and digital preservation systems.
  • Quality Control: Perform virus and integrity checks on digital files throughout the digital preservation workflow.
  • Metadata Management: Create metadata for digital files as part of pre-ingest workflow.
  • Workflow Support: Assist Digital Archivist and repository curators with pre-ingest and ingest procedures.

10% Patron Service

  • User Support: Assist patrons with inquiries and accessing archival material.

10% Professional Development /Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Education/Experience:

Bachelors degree and one year of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or High school diploma or equivalency and five years of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Experience working with digital preservation or digital archives in a library, archive, or information science setting.
  • Experience with basic scripting languages and a variety of operating systems
  • Basic knowledge of archival theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory, standards, and best practices in lifecycle management of digital archival materials.
  • Experience with archival technologies and tools related to migrating, capturing, or checking digital files (e.g. Archive-It, BulkExtractor, CheckSum Tools, Bagger, DROID, TeraCopy, ForensicToolKit, ClamAV, etc.)
  • Experience working with digital preservation, archival management, and access systems (e.g., Archivematica, Preservica, ArchivesSpace, CONTENTdm, AccessToMemory, etc.)
  • Experience providing user support.
