Description

Directs the Accounting Services functions of the University to include: the general ledger and subsidiary records, monitoring and reporting for all University financial transactions and capital assets, ensuring compliance with federal, state and institutional policies and procedures. Responsible for the preparation of the University's financial statements and coordination of the annual external audit. Serves as direct liaison for the following: the University's external audit firm, the University accounting system vendor(s) and the Office of Technology for problem resolution and/or system enhancements and the University department managers for questions or problem resolution. Supervises Accounting Services staff. Coordinates accounting-related activities of other University areas to ensure appropriate division of duties for internal control, as well as proper accounting and reporting for fiscal accuracy and control. Determines appropriate classification of accounts for both accounting principles and budgeting with AICPA, GASB, FASB and State Commissioner of Administration uniform reporting guidelines. Implements and communicates changes in accounting principles that affect the University's financial position and reporting requirements. Coordinates training for University departments and staff relating to financial policies and procedures.

Examples of Duties

  • -30%: Direct the University-wide accounting services to include: Debt Service Accounting and Compliance. Fixed Assets Accounting. General Ledger (monthly and year end close). Accounts Payable. Sponsored Research and Other External Program Accounting. All External Financial Reporting (IPEDS, CAFR, 990-T, Accreditation Agencies, etc). Financial Systems Administration and Maintenance. Maintenance of Finance System Security and Approvals. Miscellaneous Receivables and Cash Receipts. NCAA Athletics Reporting. Special Projects as Needed. Monitor, control and reporting for all University financial transactions. Ensure compliance with federal, state and institutional policies and procedures. Completing any other duties as assigned
  • -25%: Supervise Accounting Services staff to include: Directly supervise 4-6 full time staff and 2-3 student workers to operate accounting functions. Operations and general accounting. Externally sponsored programs and contracts. Auxiliary enterprises. Department revenue centers. Compliance. Asset management. Accounts Payable.
  • -5%: Serve as liaison to University budget managers and other University related offices for questions or problem resolution.
  • -5%: Coordinate accounting-related activities of other University areas to assure appropriate division of duties for internal control, as well as proper accounting and reporting for fiscal accuracy and control.
  • -5%: Serve as direct liaison for the University to the accounting system software vendor(s) and to the Office of Technology for problem resolution and/or system enhancement requests, development, installation and testing. This includes serving on the system lead task committee. Oversee the accounting system access requests.
  • -10%: Prepare the University's monthly and annual financial statements which include: Managing the financial statement process. Analyzing and determining re-classifications. Integrating prepared audit schedules
  • -20%: Coordinate the University's fiscal year-end accounting close and the annual external audit of the University's financial statements, federal awards programs (single audit) and other required audits of special programs (NCAA, CPB).

Typical Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Five years progressively more responsible accounting experience, preferable in higher education/fund accounting.
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience, preferably in accounting or finance.

Licenses and Certifications

Must complete SAMII Financial Agency security request form and must submit to Missouri State Highway Patrol criminal record check as a condition of employment. Ongoing attendance in continuing education courses/seminars preferred. Credit Check Required
