Organizational Unit Overview:

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry, and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provide dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties:

The Director is responsible for ensuring the program design meets all accreditation standards issued by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The Director is also responsible for designing and overseeing the operation of a quality assurance and quality improvement process for the program. The Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of General Dentistry but will work closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, the Director of Community Dental Practices, the CSLC Directors and Assistant Directors, and other administrators to optimize the delivery of the program and its outcomes.

Specific duties include:

  • Design and develop the curriculum for the AEGD program, including the didactic and clinical components of the program.
  • Prepare required CODA documentation, including accreditation and self-study documents.
  • Develop admission standards and processes, interview, recruit, and select residents for the program.
  • Oversee the administrative aspects and requirements of the program, including supervising the Assistant Program Director and the Program Coordinator.
  • Coordinate with faculty across the SoDM Departments to effectively deliver the didactic program, and work with and coordinate the didactic program with the ECU General Practice Residency Program Director.
  • Provide clinical teaching of the Ross Hall-based AEGD residents as they provide clinical care for patients.
  • Work in coordination with the CSLC Directors and Assistant Directors to support the clinical teaching of CSLC-based residents at the eight CSLCs, as they provide clinical care for patients.
  • Design and develop the resident performance assessment plan and oversee the implementation of the resident performance assessments.
  • Design, develop, and implement a Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement program for the residency.
  • Produce CODA accreditation documentation as required to maintain the accreditation status of the program.
  • Conduct periodic visits to the CSLCs to both support their operations and to provide clinical teaching for the CSLC-based AEGD residents, and to assess the clinical performance of the CSLC-based residents first-hand when required.
  • Work closely with the Chair of General Dentistry, the Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, the Director of Community Dental Practices, and the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs to ensure the successful and efficient delivery of the residency program.
  • Prepare and submit grants to secure additional funding for the program.
  • Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP), which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.

While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.

Contingent upon available funding

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • DDS or DMD from a CODA accredited program
  • Certificate of Program Completion from a CODA-accredited Advanced Education in General Dentistry or General Practice Residency Program
  • 5 years full-time experience teaching in a dental school or an AEGD/GPR program

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

  • DDS, DMD, or equivalent dental degree.
  • Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured prior to the first day of employment)

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Experience in the business aspects of administration of an AEGD program, grant writing, patient relations, staffing, and financial management.
  • Experience in community outreach activities.
  • Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the CSLC model.
  • Demonstrated career progression marked by expanded administrative and leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience with electronic record-keeping, digital imaging, resident assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Knowledge of CODA accreditation standards and experience in CODA accreditation processes.
