Job Summary
This position provides direction and management oversight to one or more departments or units. Plan, direct, and coordinate operational activities.
Based on the recent Proclamation: Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers (H-1B), VSU will not be sponsoring any new H-1B visa petitions until further notice.

Responsibilities (Typical Allocation of Duties):
- Accomplish department/unit objectives - 25%: Direct the human, financial, and other resources needed to accomplish objectives of the department or unit.
- Monitor and establish processes - 20%: Monitor and establish processes to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with University and department goals.
- Direct operations - 20%: Direct the operations of the department or unit.
- Area Representative - 15%: Represent the department or unit to internal and external groups and individuals.
- Manage budget - 10%: Manage the department/unit budget.
- Compliance - 10%: Ensure commitment to and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
Supervisor Expectations:
As the supervisor of both the Counseling Center and the Health Center, the Director is expected to provide comprehensive leadership that ensures high-quality, student-centered, and compliant services. Expectations include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leadership & Vision
- Provide strategic leadership to integrate counseling and health services into a holistic model of student wellness.
- Create and maintain a culture of accountability, professionalism, and student care.
- Communicate a clear vision that aligns departmental priorities with institutional goals.
Clinical, Medical, & Ethical Oversight
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws (HIPAA, FERPA, state licensing standards).
- Uphold ethical standards of counseling, medical, and mental health professions.
- Maintain effective risk management, crisis intervention, and emergency response protocols.
- Promote best practices in integrated health care, prevention, and treatment.
Operational & Administrative Management
- Manage budgets, resources, facilities, and staffing for both centers responsibly and efficiently.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate professional and support staff, ensuring ongoing professional development.
- Develop and enforce policies, procedures, and documentation standards for both centers.
- Oversee scheduling and service delivery to ensure maximum and efficient use of these services by students and employees.
- Oversee contractual agreements with outside agencies.
Collaboration & Campus Engagement
- Serve as the university's subject matter expert for student health and counseling issues.
- Collaborate with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Athletics, Residence Life, and other campus units to promote well-being.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community providers and local health resources.
- Engage in university-wide wellness initiatives and prevention programming.
- Prioritize initiatives that foster student success, retention, and overall well-being.
- Work closely with Student Conduct & Title IX, Campus Police, and other partners to protect student safety.
Assessment & Continuous Improvement
- Collect and analyze data to measure utilization, satisfaction, and outcomes.
- Provide annual reports, key performance indicators (KPIs), and recommendations to university leadership.
- Implement continuous quality improvement based on assessment findings.
- Stay informed on trends in college health and counseling to adapt services proactively.
- Monitor campus and national trends, proactively addressing emerging student needs.
Required Qualifications:
Required Experience: Bachelor's degree in a specified field and five (5) years of related work experience in a related field is required. Terminal degree and/or professional licensure, certification, and/or designation may be required in some areas.
