The person filling this position will be working in a start-up environment – creating processes and procedures, navigating unexpected obstacles, and adapting to change frequently. An agile mindset and flexible approach to daily responsibilities is needed as we define new ways of working within a well-established university. We are seeking a solution-focused person with a demonstrated ability to create new paths to achieve results.

We are seeking a Director Financial Aid who will provide direct support to students, faculty, and staff in all aspects of the application, awarding, delivery, and reconciliation of grants and private and institutional financial aid and is tasked to work with and through the JHU Office of Student Enrollment & Accounts Management (SEAM) who oversees the process and management of all federal financial aid and Title IV functions. The Director will require a strong foundation in Title IV Financial Aid, a commitment to providing the highest levels of customer service to students, faculty, and staff, and knowledge of financial aid, billing, and registration processes to serve students and learners.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Counsel students on federal, state, and institutional aid programs, regulations, and application procedures.
  • Resolve error and exception reports related to financial aid administration.
  • Review financial aid and student accounts data for accuracy. Track and resolve student issues with business holds and disbursement.
  • Respond to requests for financial and institutional aid information from divisional students, faculty, and staff.
  • Monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards and coordinate appeals and academic plans with SEAM.
  • Work with SEAM and Financial Aid Compliance to prepare and publish annual Cost of Attendance budgets.
  • Direct planning efforts in collaboration with divisional Enrollment Management and Finance to develop and administrate institutional aid optimization modeling for degree program students to meet strategic enrollment goals.
  • Provide and reconcile reports on financial aid state scholarship programs and financial assistance accounting operations budget.
  • Process and coordinate with the Finance Office, Programs, and Development to manage the Departmental Graduate Aid (DGA) program.
  • Process, manage, and update AmeriCorps awards for Teach for America/TNTP (TFA) degree program students.
  • Regularly review and recommend case resolutions to SEAM SAO’s divisional collections reports.
  • Regularly review and participate in the General Petition Review Committee for refund requests.
  • Oversee the administration of the Community Service Federal Work-Study program, including monitoring expenditures, development and maintenance of budgets, databases, and other record-keeping systems.
  • Maintain electronic student records and use federal, state, and university computer software and data interfaces.
  • Provide and reconcile reports on financial aid state scholarship programs and financial assistance accounting operations budget.
  • Assist with processes between the SEAM Financial Aid & Student Accounts, the Development Office, and the Finance Office in the account balance reporting, program operation, awarding, and disbursing of grants and all institutional scholarship programs.
  • Participate in occasional outreach events on and off campus.
  • Required to participate in all assigned events based on the need of the office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five years related experience, with prior supervisory experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of related experience in a higher education financial aid office, including leadership, supervisory, and systems responsibilities.
  • Experience processing Federal, State, Institutional, and private financial aid.
  • Experience complying with FERPA and other federal and state laws/policies regarding student records confidentiality. Knowledge and understanding of Title IV student financial aid rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Homeland Security, Citizenship, Selective Service, Social Security Administration, and NSLDS statuses related to awarding federal financial aid.
