Job Summary

The Director I for Research Core Facility directs and grows a successful research core facility and to perform, develop and interpret the results of scientific services of an advanced and specialized nature. This role is responsible for providing efficient management and day-to-day operational oversight of a UT San Antonio Research Core Facility.

The Director I of the Genomics Core Facility will provide strategic leadership and management for a modern, research-driven genomic core, supporting advanced scientific services in next-generation sequencing and spatial transcritomics. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations, ensuring high-quality service delivery, fostering technology development, and managing the facility's personnel, resources, and research collaborations with the core facilities network.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Manages operational, administrative and financial functions of a core facility. Serve as a liaison between the core facility and administrative staff. Develops budget and pricing/rates and manage accounts.
  2. Serves as the representative of Genomics Core Facility to the research community, including promoting its equipment and services.
  3. Consults, collaborates and supports researchers from across campus and external to UT San Antonio by providing complex support and guidance in experimental design, sample preparation, data collection and computational analysis. Maintains user lists and contract records.
  4. Develops and implements methods utilizing core equipment and expertise.
  5. Oversees installation of new equipment and maintenance/vendor relations for equipment service, negotiate service contracts, and troubleshoot/repair equipment not under service contract. Identifies and decommissions out of date equipment and technology.
  6. Oversees user training and provide technical support to users. Develops training materials and maintain lab safety records for all users.
  7. Leads and/or assists in preparation and writing of grant and budget proposals. Prepare written and oral reports to other units, and support agencies. Collaborates on relevant grant opportunities for core operating support and instrument purchases.
  8. Manages core facility communications, including website, social media, client feedback and print media. Conducts tours, demonstrations and instructional workshops.
  9. Presents core services and research findings at seminars and conferences.
  10. Hires, trains, supervises and develops core personnel, including performance management.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible related research experience.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data sets and technical aspects of techniques to researchers with minimal expertise in those fields.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong documentation skills to assist in writing proposals, comprehensive reports for clients and collaboration for scientific projects.
  • Knowledge of website development and marketing opportunities.
  • Knowledge of best auditing practices.

Working Conditions

  • Office and laboratory environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
  • After hours and weekend work is required on an occasional basis.
  • Occasional after hours and weekend work or overtime may be required

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasional

This position will work primarily on campus in Texas. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
