Position Summary:

The director of noncredit and alternative enrollment for CMU Innovation and Online provides strategic leadership and institutional stewardship for professional development, noncredit learning, and alternative enrollment pathways delivered online and at distance. The director holds primary responsibility for the design, implementation, governance, and sustainability of the university’s noncredit portfolio, digital credentialing infrastructure, and alternative enrollment models. This role oversees online program management relationships, workforce and state-funded initiatives, along with dual and concurrent enrollment programs, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, compliance requirements, and external partner needs. The director serves as a senior advisor on noncredit and alternative enrollment strategy and acts as a key risk-management and continuity leader for this portfolio.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience working in an educational capacity, including leadership or program oversight.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and managing noncredit or alternative enrollment programs for working professionals, adults, and post-traditional learners.
  • Experience overseeing online or distance learning platforms and/or credentialing systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, systems, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated leadership ability with various populations.
  • Strong record of strategic collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation within institutional environments.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends, policy considerations, and funding structures in the noncredit, workforce development, and alternative learning landscape.
  • Experience developing, scaling, and sustaining noncredit and alternative enrollment programs.
  • Experience with instructional design, digital credentialing, or online learning systems for noncredit education.
  • Experience teaching in higher education or facilitating adult learning experiences.
  • Experience managing external partnerships, contracts, or vendor relationships.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all noncredit and alternative enrollment programming offered through CMU Innovation and Online.
  • Directs the governance, implementation, and continuous improvement of noncredit digital learning platforms, credentialing systems, and noncredit learning environments, ensuring reliability, scalability, and institutional alignment.
  • Leads the analysis, development, and lifecycle management of the noncredit portfolio, including identifying growth opportunities, responding to workforce and industry needs, and ensuring program sustainability.
  • Oversees dual and concurrent enrollment, including early and middle college programs facilitated through CMU Innovation and Online, including faculty engagement, course and instructor approvals, institutional coordination, and external district partnerships.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of all noncredit, professional development, and dual enrollment activities including associated staff supporting these initiatives.
  • Serves as the primary institutional lead for workforce development initiatives and state-funded or grant-supported noncredit programs, including compliance, reporting, and renewal requirements.
  • Monitors enrollment, financial performance, and risk indicators across noncredit and alternative enrollment programs, and recommends strategic adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborates with University Marketing and Communications and internal stakeholders to guide marketing, recruitment, and outreach strategies for noncredit and alternative enrollment programs.
  • Collaborates with faculty, subject matter experts, and campus partners to design, implement, and evaluate new noncredit and professional development learning experiences.
  • Oversees the development, issuance, and governance of digital badges, certificates, and other credentials associated with noncredit, professional development, and alternative enrollment programming.
  • Manages contracts, services, and relationships related to digital badging platforms, online program managers, and other third-party vendors supporting noncredit and alternative enrollment.
  • Serves as CMU’s primary point of accountability for the online professional development learning management system and related noncredit learning technologies.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and presents reports, recommendations, and strategic updates related to noncredit and alternative enrollment programs for university leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Leads initiatives and partnerships with Michigan Works and other workforce development entities in alignment with CMU Innovation and Online priorities.
  • Participates in and contributes to university-wide committees, task forces, and initiatives related to professional development, noncredit education, and alternative enrollment.
  • Serves as an advisor and point of consultation for requests to develop new noncredit, credentialing, or alternative enrollment learning experiences.
  • Manages and stewards organizational relationships with external partners, ensuring clarity, alignment, and institutional integrity.
  • Creates, reviews, or advises on content and structure for online professional development and noncredit learning modules as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in support of institutional priorities.
