Director of Alumni Equity & Inclusion Programs

Position Purpose:

The Director of Alumni Equity and Inclusion Programs will foster meaningful connections and design strategic programs and experiences to increase engagement in the life of the College for MOSAIC alumni. The Bates MOSAIC program includes underrepresented racial, ethnic, LGBTQIA+, first-generation to college and international alumni. The Director will be accountable for the creation and implementation of programs, events, and volunteer opportunities, on and off campus, that will strengthen communication, networks, and the volunteer pipeline.

Job Duties:

  • Create and implement a strategic plan that will build on existing programs, identify opportunities for innovative programming, and establish achievable and measurable engagement goals.
  • Foster a sense of community among MOSAIC alumni through regional and on-campus programs and one-on-one meetings.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of communication and marketing strategy for MOSAIC programs.
  • Identify opportunities for increasing volunteerism for MOSAIC programming in major regional markets and/or with other priority affinity groups; travel regionally to support these activities.
  • Collaborate with advancement colleagues to ensure success of key initiatives and programs, including signature MOSAIC programs during Back to Bates and Reunion Weekend.
  • Increase opportunities for meaningful connections between alumni and students with diverse identities and backgrounds.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Benjamin Mays Black Alumni Society.
  • Manage the Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement - Identity and Affinity Programs.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Bates history, academic, extracurricular and athletic programs, and its faculty, students and administration.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the college’s priorities and initiatives of the faculty and administration.
  • Participate in departmental and professional training programs to increase expertise in the profession when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with campus partners when appropriate.
  • Adhere to departmental standards, policies, and procedures with respect to all aspects of their work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in college advancement, alumni engagement, DEI programs, and/or equivalent experience in related fields.
  • Demonstrated success in volunteer recruitment, management, and stewardship.
  • Understanding of data and how to analyze for application and results preferred.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts.

  • Ability to determine engagement programming needs based on best practices and develop plans, strategy, messaging, as well as tactical execution of plans in coordination with colleagues and other college staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate an inclusive work culture.
  • Impeccable discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to remain composed, friendly, and demonstrate poise under stress while working in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; high level of accuracy; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision. Demonstrates initiative.
  • Impeccable organizational skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain relationships with constituents from a variety of backgrounds, sometimes with competing needs and goals.
  • Keen attention to detail necessary for successful documentation, planning, and execution.
  • Proficiency in data management systems, mail merges, statistics and basic computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • Creative, flexible and a sense of humor.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train, or bus) domestically as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work some weekends, evenings, and other non-traditional schedules.
