Job Summary: The Director of Civil Rights Compliance and Campus Title IX Coordinator will provide institutional leadership and oversight of the College's efforts to respond to acts of reported discrimination or harassment. The director will ensure institutional compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, and the Maine Human Rights Act. In addition, this position will ensure compliance with other federal, state and local laws, ordinances and applicable guidance of sexual harassment, gender-based violence, discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation and national origin among other identifiable characteristics or identities.

The director will report to the senior vice president for inclusion and diversity and will work within the larger office of inclusion and diversity which has, as its charge, the responsibility to build a sense of belonging and ensure members of the Bowdoin community are treated fairly. This position requires strong judgement, compassion, confidentiality and the ability to navigate challenging and complex issues in a time sensitive manner with professionalism and care. The director will serve as the key institutional resource for all members of our community as we work to eliminate instances of discrimination or harassment on campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster Inclusive Collaboration: Partner with a wide range of campus stakeholders to promote an academic and workplace culture grounded in equity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all students and employees.
  • Policy Implementation & Compliance: Lead the implementation of institution-wide policies and procedures that uphold a safe and respectful environment, free from discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, in alignment with federal and institutional standards.
  • Community Standards & Support: Champion a campus-wide culture of belonging by ensuring all community members are aware of their rights, available resources, and the fair processes in place to address and resolve concerns.

The hiring range for this position is expected to be: $121,500 - $132,500.

BENEFITS AND PERKS

Education/Skills Requirements: Bachelor's degree required, Master's in Law, Social Work, Psychology, Higher Education, or Public Administration preferred.

  • In-depth understanding of Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, the Maine Human Rights Act, and other relevant federal, state, and local anti-discrimination laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing Title IX processes, including intake, investigation, resolution, and prevention education.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders with empathy, clarity, and cultural competence.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills in high-stakes, time-sensitive situations involving community safety and legal risk.
  • Competence in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data related to civil rights compliance and campus climate.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents: 4-7 years of relevant experience with discrimination prevention or response requiring investigation required. Must also have direct experience working directly with those reporting acts of violence, discrimination or harassment.

  • Skilled in managing sensitive and complex cases involving discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct with discretion and fairness.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate institutional policies and procedures related to civil rights compliance and equity.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver training programs on topics such as discrimination prevention, harassment, Title IX, and inclusive practices.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with the highest ethical standards.

Standard Work Days and Hours: This is an exempt level position that requires the time commitment to complete the essential duties of the position. Standard administrative hours are 8:30am - 5:00pm. Full time, year round with minimal travel and availability for regular evening and occasional weekend work. Non-essential status in the event of a weather emergency. This position is on-site.
