Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Conducting, Education, or related field. Five (5) years of full-time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment, and development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Conducting, Educational Leadership/Administration, or related field. Six (6) years of full-time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment and development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level. Commitment to a student-centered pedagogy. Experience writing drill for marching band. Experience arranging music for a marching band. Experience working with a diverse student body. Experience in student leadership development.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Director of Marching and Athletic Bands is a highly visible and engaged, full-time (12-month) position with responsibility for a comprehensive Athletic Bands program, currently serving 85 students with a desire to grow to a 200-person band. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students and maintains important partnerships with the Departments of Athletics, Music, and Various Offices within Student Affairs. Therefore, the selected candidate must possess strong communication, interpersonal, and management skills and a commitment to a student-centered pedagogy.
The Spirit of Stony Brook (SOSB) Band consists of a Marching Band, Pep Band, Color Guard, Majorettes, Twirler(s), and drum line. The Director works closely with the university dance, cheer, and mascot clubs/teams. The SOSB Bands perform at all home football games and select away football games, as well as home men's and women's basketball games, and other select sports/activities deemed desirable by the administration. They also participate in select regional and national community events, parades, and performance opportunities as determined by the administration.
The successful incumbent will exercise strong organizational and time management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
- The Director is responsible for show conceptualization, design, instruction, and execution, including but not limited to drill, visual arts, integration of Spirit Groups (Dance team, Cheerleaders, Mascot, student group performers, etc.) for Pre-game, Halftime, and stand performances for marching, pep, and show bands as well as for non-athletic special events.
- The Director is responsible for all basic, intermediate and advanced skill development and instruction required for high-level marching and pep band performance. The Director will lead the coordination of band camp and the sound execution of performances.
- The Director will coordinate efforts and band performances which involve outreach to the local and regional community. This includes parade requests/performances, partnerships with local high school bands, participation in university and community service, charitable and philanthropic initiatives as well as the development and coordination of Stony Brook Band day/Summer Band Academies.
- The Director is responsible for all marketing and recruitment strategies in order to continue to maintain the size and the quality of the bands as well as to further position the program for regional and national success. This requires actively participating in summer Orientation programs, collaborating with Admissions, as well as training and developing summer student staff recruitment teams. It also requires establishing and maintaining professional relationships within the university community and with local school districts.
- The Director is responsible for identifying, maintaining, monitoring, inventorying all departmental equipment & property including instruments, uniforms and field equipment.
- The Director is responsible for the selection, training, development and supervision of professional staff, contracted staff as well as a strong team of undergraduate and graduate student staff.
- This position is responsible for departmental major programming initiatives, including the organization of a summer Band Camp, summer band and dance camp academies, Band Homecoming events, Student Spring Banquet, Alumni Programming and Parent & Family Programming as well as educational programs that foster the development of students in the areas of leadership, civic engagement, multicultural competency, character, integrity and team building.
- The Director plays a leading role in the important function of advising various leadership and student groups within the band including the student Leadership Council, Color Guard, Field and section leaders, Drum Majors, Executive Board. The Director also advises and mentors students on personal, academic and professional issues and serves as a resource and referral agent.
- The Director will coordinate plans and performances which involve travel to postseason tournaments. This will include assisting in the selection of student performers, working with tournament officials and producers, athletic marketing staff and peer band programs from other institutions as well as helping to coordinate travel logistics.
- The Director is responsible for a range of administrative duties including but not limited to supervisory administrative duties (i.e., to staff evaluation, staff scheduling, approving hours), financial administrative duties (i.e., reconciling procurement card expenditures), performance and travel related administrative duties (i.e., assembling performers, arranging transportation, food and lodging), facilities duties (i.e., reserving field space, equipment inventory) and recruitment & marketing administrative duties (monitoring recruitment database, responding to student interest inquiries, developing outreach plan) and other administrative duties as assigned.
- Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
Salary: $96,000 + $4,000 Location Pay = $100,000 Total Compensation
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
