Department Summary: VCU's Facilities Management Department is seeking a Director of Space Management.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of the Director of Space Management is to be the steward of the university's physical space assets, ensuring that all owned and leased space—academic, research, administrative, and auxiliary—are strategically planned, accurately inventoried, and optimally utilized to directly advance the institution's core mission and strategic goals (e.g., teaching, research growth, student experience). Supervises three full time staff in support of space management data gathering and maintenance of information.

General Responsibilities Summary

The Director of Space Management is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the university’s physical space assets.

Key responsibilities are:

  • Policy & Strategy: Develop university-wide space policies, standards, and strategic plans to ensure optimal space utilization and alignment with the institution's core mission and Master Plan.
  • Data Stewardship: Direct the accurate maintenance and governance of the centralized space inventory database (CAFM/IWMS), including tracking all space classifications, square footage, and occupancy.
  • Analysis & Reporting: Conduct rigorous space utilization and needs analyses and provide data-driven reports and recommendations to senior leadership and Space Allocation Committees to inform decision-making.
  • Allocation & Planning: Manage the process for reviewing, approving, and executing all space requests and reallocations, serving as the primary advisor on complex space assignments, and major departmental moves.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the key liaison to facilitate consensus and coordination among academic, administrative, and facilities leaders to resolve competing space priorities.
  • Oversee the management of the GIS system.: Maintain and direct improvements to the GIS and the associated layers of information. Develop provide layers as requested by clients.
  • Oversee the management of the Plan Xcess database: Manages the database to ensure all plans are accurately entered into the system in a user friendly method.
  • Develop and manage the fledgling space sensor program: Coordinate and direct the installation of a space sensor system in coordination with university partners.

The Director must be the university's expert on physical space, blending policy governance with data-driven strategy to ensure maximum utilization of the campus footprint.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Architecture or Engineering
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in space planning, facilities planning, or space management within a large, complex organizational setting.
  • Some experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity, overseeing a small team of professional space planners or analysts.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in space management systems (CAFM/IWMS), and ability to read/interpret architectural drawings (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Proven experience in developing space standards and policies, and conducting data-driven utilization analyses to inform executive decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Salary Range: $120,000 - 150,000
