Position Summary

The Director for Student Support and Success oversees programs and services designed to enhance student achievement, retention, and overall well-being. Key responsibilities include managing tutoring as well as coordinating initiatives that address barriers to student success, such as financial literacy, mental health support, and career readiness. The director works closely with faculty, staff, and external partners to develop inclusive and equitable strategies that meet the diverse needs of the student population. Additionally, this role involves using data to assess program effectiveness, ensuring continuous improvement aligned with the college's mission and goals. The position provides leadership for the integration of learning support programs and services with academic programs, student service initiatives and all Jackson College locations, including the College's Correction Education Program. The position requires the ability to present confidently to both large and small groups, as well as work non-standard hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary. Excellent technology skills required.

Essential Functions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following and additional duties maybe assigned.

  • Oversee daily operations for the Center for Student Success, Accommodations and Student Resources, the Testing Lab, TRIO, and Student Life including Harriet's Hub department. Develop, direct, and monitor student support services initiatives year-round.
  • Fiscal acuity to manage budgets and supervise grant-funded programs, including federal and state grants.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, serving as the 504 Coordinator for the College. Additionally, ensure compliance with the Fair Housing Act for review and approvals of Emotional Support Animals.
  • Supervise Accommodations and Student Resources Coordinator as they work with students to assess accommodations and needs for on campus and/or off campus resources.
  • Evaluate disability documentation from qualified professionals and determine student specific accommodation plans and consult with faculty, navigators, and administrators for implantation as needed. Co-coordinate summer bridge programs for students such as Ready, Set, Jet!
  • Administrative oversight of the community referral procedure.
  • Supervise the Supplemental Support Specialist who oversees the selection, staffing, and training of paraprofessional tutors, professional tutors, and student tutors in accordance with credential and competencies requirements.
  • Supervise the Coordinator of the Center for Student Success who manages the day-to-day operations of the Center.
  • Supervise TRIO Director and actively contribute to the acquisition and stewardship of the TRIO grant.
  • Institute a plan for students requesting accommodation. Develop a process to provide required college departments (i.e., Information Technology, Facilities) with advance notice of accommodation needs on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate student support services offered by all JC Centers including the Corrections Education Program.
  • Supervise Student Life Coordinator to provide oversight of Harriet's Hub, the Student Government Association (SGA), student organizations, and ensure the successful execution of campus wide student engagement through relevant student activities and events.
  • Identify, analyze and report quantitative and qualitative measures to evaluate effectiveness of student success initiatives and ensure continuous improvement in support of the College's strategic agenda. Document processes used in operation in alignment with institutional quality initiatives.
  • Utilize data to identify the diverse needs of students and develop and implement tailored strategies or programs to address these needs.
  • Represent the College to the community with participation in local and state activities, committees, and in professional organizations. Develop and monitor processes for assessment of student and community needs that support student learning (i.e., programs, supplemental instruction, assistive technologies, software or support devices).
  • Benchmark best practices and technological advancements in student success models. Based upon research conducted, implement findings to enhance Center services.
  • Participate in and provide professional development opportunities for staff, faculty, and administrators to increase knowledge, understanding and skill in working with at risk students.
  • Collaborate with various College departments to facilitate campus initiatives that support the successful integration of at-risk students into college life. Contribute to the creation and implementation of outreach programs to bolster student preparedness.
  • Responsible for adhering to College policies, as well as understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College's beliefs, values, mission and vision and agree to be evaluated by same.
  • Responsible for understanding that this position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position. You must complete the annual Clery Act training, for and act as, a Campus Security Authority.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Contacts and Purpose of Contacts

Internal: Ongoing and interactive relationship with Student Services, Academic Deans, Administrators, Information Technology, Facilities, Athletics, Residence Life, Multicultural Relations, Faculty, Students, and Staff. Participation on and/or resources for college committees, strategic planning boards, etc., as appropriate.

External: Represents the College to state and local agencies, such as disability services providers, K-12 School Districts, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the College's policies, labor agreement and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Directly supervises all staff in the Center for Student Success, including the department coordinator, Student Accommodations and Resource Coordinator, Support Specialist, and Supplemental Support Specialist; Testing Lab Coordinator; TRIO Project Director, and the Student Life Coordinator. Provides supervision of adjunct faculty members working in the Center as Writing Faculty Tutors.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's Degree preferred.

Experience

  • Five years of increasing levels of leadership/administrative responsibility in a collegiate setting, preferably in student services.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational planning, policy development and outcomes/needs assessment.

Other Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty and administrative population.
  • Strong leadership ability and proven skills in conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, and decision-making.
  • Technology proficiency.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to College leadership, students, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
