Director of Visual Arts
Job Details
The Director of Visual Art is a year-round leadership position overseeing visual arts education at Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp. Reporting to the Provost, the Director provides visionary leadership for curriculum and programming, teaches classes during the academic year and summer, manages faculty and staff, and cultivates strong relationships with students, alumni, and donors. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and development, admissions collaboration, guest artist engagement, gallery and facility management, and budget oversight. The Director advances innovative approaches to visual art education, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, and represents Interlochen at the national and international level.
Essential Duties:
- Provide visionary leadership for visual art education at Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, aligning with institutional goals
- Teach one to two classes each semester and appropriate classes during camp
- Recruit, hire, orient, and evaluate visual art faculty and staff, including the Richardson-Spica Fellow Artist-in-Residence program
- Partner with Admissions to recruit and manage visual art student enrollment and review applications
- Schedule and host guest artists for lectures and workshops with students
- Manage the visual art facilities and professional gallery, including exhibitions, visiting artist bookings, contracts, shipping, signage, installation, and supplies
- Develop curriculum, texts, resources, and real-time and virtual learning opportunities with attention to contemporary trends in visual art
- Foster interdisciplinary initiatives across academic and artistic divisions
- Support and mentor highly creative students with diverse learning styles and backgrounds
- Develop and manage the annual divisional calendar of events and classes in coordination with other departments
- Oversee the divisional operational budget and restricted funds
- Purchase, distribute, and maintain equipment and supplies for all visual art studios, from traditional tools to advanced technologies (laser cutter, CNC Router, 3D printer, etc.)
- Support the professional growth of faculty through development opportunities
- Advocate for and represent the visual art program to senior leadership, alumni, and donors
- Balance competing program agendas and faculty needs in a collaborative environment
- Advance innovative ideas and elevate Interlochen’s visual art program in a competitive international environment
- Collaborate with Interlochen leadership on presentations and institutional initiatives
- Address curriculum development, faculty teaching assignments, grading disputes, and student or parent concerns
Qualifications:
- Master's degree required
- Proven leadership experience in both teaching and administration
- Deep knowledge of the history, contemporary trends, practices, and pedagogies in visual arts education at the national and international level
- Demonstrated ability to represent an arts program at the highest professional level
- Strong written and spoken communication skills
- Ability to relate to, motivate, and energize students
- Effective communicator with students, parents, colleagues, alumni, and donors
- Skilled in building networks and partnerships with national and international arts education and professional communities
- Commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration within a multi-disciplinary environment
- Proficiency in the use of technology and digital tools relevant to arts education
- Ability to teach visual arts classes as part of the academic and camp programs
- Knowledge of all or some combination of the following equipment: Gas and electric kilns, table saws and other woodworking tools, easels, sewing machines, laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printer, large-format printers and scanners, general studio and classroom technology for visual arts instruction
