Description

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Inclusivity and Community Well-Being, the Director of Wellness coordinates all wellness-related educational and outreach and programming services for the campus community. The director serves as the primary liaison between Hood College and Frederick Health RHS (FH), Advanced Behavioral Health, Inc. (ABH) and other health constituencies. The director works collaboratively with internal groups and external partners to coordinate and implement programs to support health and wellness educational initiatives for students, faculty and staff. The director also lends expertise and collaborates with the College's own public health program to promote student learning and research opportunities. The ideal candidate is a detailed and highly-organized individual to handle the administrative roles of the position.

Educational (50%)

  • Coordinates with Senior Team, the Office of Human Resources, Faculty, Staff, and Students to plan, develop, implement, assess and promote campus-wide health initiatives (outreach programs and activities related to health and wellness education, fitness, healthy lifestyle, student success, and workplace well-being);
  • Coordinates and contributes to wellness (Healthy U) newsletter;
  • Continues to create and publish Stall Street Journals;
  • Lead the College's alcohol and other drug prevention efforts;
  • Facilitates co-curricular programs in collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students. Such programs may include but are not limited to annual depression screening, Spring Break Safety, Problem Gambling, etc.;
  • Conducts wellness overview training for undergraduate and graduate students including student groups, e.g., Resident Assistants (RAs), Orientation Coordinators and Assistants (OCs/OAs), Active Minds, etc.;
  • Attends meetings and works collaboratively with local health and behavioral health organizations, community agencies and Maryland Collaborative to organize and facilitate educational programs and trainings, as needed;
  • In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research, conducts surveys, focus groups and gathers student input to devise relevant programming; assists in analyzing data and communicates summaries with relevant constituencies;
  • Develops campus-wide alerts regarding communicable diseases, CDC alerts and other health-related concerns, as needed;
  • Serves on Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT);
  • Teaches, as needed, physical education courses and/or in the College's public health and nutrition programs and leverages expertise and partnerships in support of the programs;
  • Lead or support campus partners in leveraging grants to facilitate programming such as mental health services and problem gambling.

Administrative (50%)

  • Teaches, as needed, physical education courses and/or in the College's public health program and leverages expertise and partnerships in support of the program.
  • Ensures that all incoming students medical records are received and processed in a timely manner so that students are ready to begin classes;
  • Acts as liaison to Frederick Health and other outside agencies and health care providers;
  • Works collaboratively with Frederick Health RHS to assess student satisfaction of services.
  • Facilitates renewal of annual and/or multi-year agreements with external agencies, i.e., Frederick Health, Advanced Behavioral Health, Inc., Frederick County Health Department, etc.;
  • Meets regularly with Frederick Health administrators and Hood College Graduate Counseling Program administrators to identify best practices and share information on college policies, procedures and campus climate issues;
  • Conducts annual college health and wellness assessments;
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and issues in college/university wellness services;
  • Participates in campus and community committees, teams, coalitions and initiatives;
  • Oversees programming; coordinates programming with other divisions;
  • Liaises with Department of Athletics;
  • Serves as Maryland Collaborative Advisory Board member;
  • Prepares reports and/or presentations as needed for various internal and external agencies;
  • Serves as the primary representative on health related matters at college-wide events, e.g., Commencement, Convocation, Discover Hood Day, Admitted Students Day, etc.
  • Collaborates on the supervision of mental health counselors.

Education and/or Experience

Master's degree required in a health-related field including public health, counseling or nursing.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

  • Five to ten years of relevant experience or the equivalent education and experience.
  • Effective communicator
  • Demonstrated assessment experience

Preferred Skills and Characteristics

  • Work experience in college/university health center, or community health agency.

Technology Skills

Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Canva, e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Language Skills

Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Compensation

This is a position with an annual starting salary range of $54,900 to $61,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant's skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
