Job Description
DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Equity & Student Achievement, plans, organizes, controls, and directs the processes, programs, and operations of the Veterans Resource Center, including introduction to admission, registration, counseling, and financial aid services available to Veterans Resource Center students. The Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of programs to support student retention and success. This position manages day-to-day operations and supervises full and part-time staff. Develops and recommends techniques to improve program functions and ensures optimum performance and service to students, including grants. Stays current with federal, state, and local requirements and best practices; performs other duties as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Develops, plans, and organizes events, activities, organizational fairs, campus activities, meetings, presentations, and programs to provide equitable access to information and assistance to Veterans Resource Center students. (E)
- Organizes and monitors the certification of Veteran's benefits under guidelines set by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. (E)
- Works collaboratively with various campus departments and external organizations to coordinate support services and resources for Veterans Resource Center students. (E)
- Assists in developing and implementing equitable strategies to promote access, recruitment, success, retention, and completion of educational goals for Veterans Resource Center students. (E)
- Coordinates the dissemination of College program data, service information, and available resources to Veterans Resource Center students. (E)
- Serves as a liaison between prospective and current students, college departments, other institutions, and community partners. (E)
- Recruits, trains, directs, and evaluates student workers; maintains and updates student records; monitors student progress and engagement; verifies program requirements and eligibility. (E)
- Provides and coordinates services such as case management for academic achievement and personal growth. (E)
- Uses student information systems to record and retrieve data.
- Assists in recordkeeping, filing, data assembly, report preparation, and maintaining equipment and inventory.
- Attends staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and seminars; some travel required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university AND four (4) years of experience planning, directing, and organizing veterans affairs or related projects; OR a graduate degree AND two (2) years of similar experience. This is a categorically funded position; continued employment is contingent upon funding.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's License and current auto insurance; work a variable schedule; obtain and maintain certification as a Certifying Official with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Higher education in community colleges; participatory governance; District organization; DEIA principles; institutional learning outcomes; methods for working with students and the public; community organizations; recruitment techniques; statistical record-keeping; English proficiency; office practices; communication skills; collaboration techniques; training principles; project planning; budget preparation; grant compliance.
ABILITY TO: Learn applicable laws and regulations; work with diverse backgrounds; work flexible schedules; explain college curriculum; use data for decision-making; promote partnerships; communicate effectively; lead and supervise; operate office equipment; maintain records; work independently; meet deadlines; direct teams; commit to equity and student success.
OTHER INFORMATION
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD, AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide work direction to classified employees, student workers, and others.
CONTACTS: Administrators, co-workers, staff, faculty, students, vendors, community partners, and the general public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Move throughout campus; sit or stand for extended periods; lift objects up to 25 pounds; pull/push heavy objects; reach for records.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment with constant interruptions; occasional outdoor work; evening, weekend, and holiday hours; occasional travel and event setup.
