Disability Affairs and Non-discrimination Compliance Associate

The Diversity and Access Office is responsible for university-wide compliance with federal, state, and local regulations concerning disability access and non-discrimination for which other offices are not responsible. The Disability Affairs and Non-discrimination Compliance Associate (Associate), in coordination and collaboration with the Director, Diversity and Access, will play an instrumental role implementing the office’s compliance obligations related to ADA, non-discrimination, and federal affirmative action legal requirements in alignment with the University’s mission.

Reporting to the Director of the Diversity and Access Office, the Associate in collaboration with the Director and the Office of the General Counsel, serves as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Program Coordinator by advising schools and units regarding matters concerning compliance of sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Sections 503 and 504). The Associate will also assist in ensuring Stanford's compliance with the Equal Pay Act, the ADA, the Age Discrimination and Employment Act, Executive Orders, FEHA, and the UNRUH Civil Rights Act, among other laws.

Primary Responsibilities

ADA and Section 504 and 503

  • Develop training and provide technical advice for university stakeholders regarding ADA compliance
  • Provide oversight for Stanford’s ADA Barrier Removal Program and respond to individual requests for removal of architectural barriers in collaboration with the Director, Office of the General Counsel, University Human Resources and Faculty Affairs
  • Provide guidance to Stanford's construction related departments on the accessibility requirements of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines ADAAG, Title 24 of the California State Building Code and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA)
  • Support the Office of the General Counsel in responding to civil and federal legal complaints alleging discrimination on the basis of disability
  • Plan and coordinate disability access and respond to requests for accommodations for major Stanford events, and respond to disability access inquiries and coordinate auxiliary aides and services from visitors
  • Provide direct accommodation analysis and/or implementation in limited areas

Additional Responsibilities

Non-Discrimination Compliance

  • Assist in advising university employee groups regarding non-discrimination compliance
  • Assist with administration and investigation of certain student grievance procedures, employee complaints related to the ADA employee accommodations interactive process, and certain admissions complaints

  • Consistent with any current federal laws, rules, and regulations, the Associate will assist the Director with the responsibilities for Equal Employment Opportunity and the implementation of federal contractor Affirmative Action Programs for Stanford

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of audit, privacy, compliance or other relevant experience in higher education, health care, research-based non-profit organizations, or government contracting or combination of education and relevant experience. Post-graduate education or qualification is highly desirable.
  • Preferred: 3-5 years of experience working with persons with disabilities and the provision of disability-related accommodations, and coordinating disability-related accommodations for large-scale events (1,000+)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of federal, state, and local laws regarding non-discrimination, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
  • Broad knowledge of the architectural guidelines and standards relating to equal access for persons with disabilities, including, but not limited to, ADAAG and Title 24 of the California Building Code
  • Experience in complaint investigation and resolution
  • High level management and organizational skills necessary to develop, implement and manage University-wide programs and events
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, research, and editorial skills, and ability to synthesize information and compose clear and effective writing
  • Strong customer-service focus, exceptional interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people, including students, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team or independently as an individual contributor
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities, attention to details, and demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to identify and assess risk and exposures across a wide variety of processes
  • Ability to operate in an environment where leading by influence may be required
  • Uncompromising integrity and high level of emotional intelligence
  • Strong proficiency in advanced functions of Google Office, MS Office suite, databases, Excel spreadsheets, web content management software

Certifications and Licenses:

Compliance/Privacy certification desired.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $124,540 to $146,275 per annum.
