Job Description
The Assistant Director assists students with diagnosed or potential
disabilities to integrate fully into the academic, residential, and
co-curricular life of the college, collaborating with campus
departments and programs to support students’ holistic development.
The Assistant Director provides leadership for the College’s
efforts to ensure an accessible learning and living environment for
students with disabilities. The Assistant Director will develop and
implement disability related accommodations and services and
collaborate to ensure, in partnership with multiple campus
departments and offices, access to education and programs offered
to enrolled students. This is a 1.0 FTE (40 hours/week), 12-month
position.
Direct Service to Students and Families:
- Works with students to determine eligibility for accommodations
and the necessity and type of appropriate and reasonable
accommodations;
Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding the
College’s disability services and steps for requesting
accommodations;
Follows up with students to evaluate the appropriateness of the
accommodations that were provided;
Consults with faculty and administration regarding disability
law regulations;
Assists students in developing relational and communication
skills, self-advocacy, effective self-management and organizational
skills, as well as learning strategies;
Connects students to resources on- and off-campus to encourage
success in the college environment.
Collaboration with On and Off-Campus Partners:
- Collaborates and consults with faculty, staff, and campus
partners regarding student welfare;
- Coordinates with Counseling and Psychological Services ( CAPS
), Creative Dining, the Health Center, Residential Life, and other
departments to provide reasonable accommodations and services to
students with disabilities;
- Consults and collaborates with students’ off-campus providers
to secure documentation and recommendations as necessary.
Training and Support:
- Facilitates communication between students and faculty or
students and Residential Life/Housing on particular academic and
housing accommodations, respectively, approved for students with
disabilities;
- Provides consultation and training for staff, faculty, and
student leaders regarding disabilities;
- Willing to learn, work with, and recommend appropriate
assistive technology and additional resources to assist
students.
Administrative Functions:
- Oversees specific academic services, including test proctoring,
note-taking services, CART / CPRINT, captioning, etc.
- Keeps individual records of all student and family
communication, decisions, and actions taken;
- Creates forms and procedures for systematic documentation,
administrative ease, and record keeping;
Additional Functions:
- Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation,
professional protocols, and individual privacy;
- Provide a high level of service and responsiveness to students
and their families and faculty/staff;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor;
- Committee work may be added based on a specific need of the
College.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of all broad categories of disabilities
(learning, mobility, sensory, medical, psychiatric, cognitive) and
the reasonable accommodations that might apply.
- Demonstrated knowledge of diagnostic tests and the ability to
interpret results.
- Familiarity with a variety of types of disability documentation
and arranging reasonable accommodations.
- Basic knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973 as amended, the ADA of 1990, and the ADAAA of 2008, as well as
Michigan disability laws and regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the
ability to present to racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically
diverse communities.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of departments on
campus.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to
work across campus.
- The ability to understand the needs of the campus and work
collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
- The ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations
with diplomacy and sound judgment.
- Supportive of the Hope College mission statement.
- A minimum of a Master’s degree, preferably in Rehabilitation
Counseling, Education, Special Education, or other related
field.
Preferred qualifications:
- A minimum of three to five years of experience working in
disability services in Higher Education.
- Working knowledge of assistive technology software and
devices.
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position
for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a
computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving
items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different
offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication
abilities. In the case of temporary or permanent condition(s) that

requested.
