Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. The DRC assists in meeting the unique educational needs for students with documented disabilities by promoting equal access to all programs and services. This enables eligible students to become integrated into campus life and become more successful, while maximizing their independence.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The Disability Learning Specialist reports to the Senior Associate Director of the Disability Resource Center and is part of a collaborative team of five. This position plays a key role in supporting students with disabilities by implementing administrative policies and procedures, developing program reports and proposals, and serving as an advocate for equal access. The specialist provides accommodations based on approved documentation, consults with other university offices to ensure coordinated support, and performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in education, counseling, social work, or related field and a combination of education and professional training and experience is required.
  • Minimum of one year experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience in reviewing medical, psychological, educational, and other appropriate documentation to determine students' eligibility for accommodations.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Masters degree in education, counseling, social work, or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, and student groups.
  • Experience presenting to broad groups possibly to include students, student organizations, faculty, staff or others.
  • Ability to manage and maintain records and databases to track, compile and interpret data.
  • Experience with disability law, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and experience applying this understanding in a college context.
