Job Duties:

The Disability Services Advisor (Access Specialist) will be responsible for facilitating and recommending reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to all institutional programs, services, and activities. This will be achieved through collaboration with students, faculty, and staff to identify and remove barriers, maintain student records, and provide consultative services. The advisor will also promote inclusion and universal design through education and advocacy, and assist in developing programs to enhance awareness and sensitivity towards disability services.

Work is primarily performed on the UW-Milwaukee campus and may have the option to work remotely once per week. This position may allow for additional occasional remote work, as determined and approved by Director.

The incumbent will be expected to observe an unpaid work break two months out of the year. Typically, the unpaid work breaks are expected to be from approximately mid-December to mid-January, and June, but the dates will vary each year.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the interactive process in collaboration with populations with disabilities, students, instructors, and staff to determine reasonable accommodations
  • Consults with clinician professionals to evaluate access needs and allocate resources
  • Provides consultative services to staff regarding appropriate services and accommodations
  • Provides information and resources regarding legal rights and responsibilities to populations with disabilities and their support systems
  • Conducts intake assessments, maintains current data records, and determines eligibility for disability services
  • Assists in the development of programs and initiatives that promote awareness, sensitivity, advocacy, and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities

Department: The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is dedicated to providing equal access for disabled students to the University's academic, social, cultural and recreational programs. We provide comprehensive services and accommodations for disabled students, as well as outreach and support to faculty and staff. The ARC is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible University experience for all students.

Compensation: $46,666 to $50,000/annually (this is the salary amount prorated based on 2 months of unpaid leave). Salary will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.

Required Qualifications (All must be clearly demonstrated on application materials):

  • Bachelor's degree in Educational Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Disability Studies, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field.
  • At least one semester of professional experience in a post-secondary setting directly facilitating the interactive process for determining and implementing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of disability-related laws (e.g., ADA, Section 504, Section 508) and best practices in higher education disability services.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience effectively collaborating with students, faculty, and staff to support equitable access.
  • Experience reviewing disability documentation and determining reasonable accommodations based on functional limitations and programmatic barriers.

Preferred Qualifications (Applicable experience must be clearly demonstrated on application materials):

  • Master's degree in Educational Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Disability Studies, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Two semesters of direct experience working in a post-secondary disability services office facilitating the interactive process and coordinating academic accommodations.
  • Experience engaging in collaborative problem-solving with faculty, students, and departments to address access barriers in academic and/or campus environments.
  • Familiarity with accommodation management systems (e.g., AIM, Accommodate), and learning platforms such as Canvas or Blackboard.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and its application in educational settings.
  • Experience providing training or outreach related to disability awareness, accessibility, or inclusive teaching practices in a higher education context.
