DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN MACHINE-LEARNING, STATISTICS AND DATA-CENTRIC ENGINEERING
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Machine-Learning, Statistics and Data-Centric Engineering, starting from November 2025 or as agreed. The position offers a full-time contract for up to 3.5 years, with a possible extension to 4 years, and includes a six-month trial period.
Position Description: The successful candidate will work on the project "Advances in generalized Bayesian inference via differential-geometric methods," funded by the Research Council of Finland, under the supervision of Academy Research Fellow Marcelo Hartmann and Research Fellow Luu Hoang Phuc Hau. The project focuses on developing computational algorithms and theory using information geometry and Riemannian geometry for Bayesian statistical inference and machine learning. It is part of the Helsinki Probabilistic Machine Learning Lab and involves collaboration with institutions like the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) and the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS).
The Doctoral Researcher is expected to: 1. Advance the research project with the project leader, and 2. Conduct doctoral studies leading to a completed PhD thesis within 4 years. Duties may include teaching (up to 5% of annual working time).
Requirements: A Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, with emphasis on applied mathematics/statistics/machine learning. Prior experience in probabilistic machine learning, neural networks, statistical inference, and programming (e.g., Python, Julia) is beneficial. Excellent English communication skills are required. Candidates must apply to the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science and obtain study rights within the trial period.
Salary and Benefits: Starting salary of approximately 2650-2800 euros/month, depending on qualifications. The University offers occupational health care, sports facilities, and professional development opportunities. Finland provides free schooling, family benefits, and healthcare.
