Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Biotechnology
The Cellular Engineering group, led by Assistant Professor Sesilja Aranko, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Biotechnology. The role involves joining a project to understand the role of post-translational modifications in shaping the assembly and functional properties of protein-based materials. You will develop methods for the recombinant production of post-translationally modified structural proteins, investigate their effects on material assembly and properties, and design new functional materials, particularly focusing on proteins relevant for biomaterials like silk- and collagen-proteins, to develop novel sustainable biomaterials.
The successful candidate will join the Cellular Engineering research group, which operates at the interface of molecular biotechnology, protein engineering, and biomolecular materials. The group aims to advance microbial production of sustainable solutions through methods for biomolecular protein-conjugation reactions and enzymatic post-translational modifications, including phosphorylations, hydroxylations, and glycosylations. They also apply ultra-high throughput screening technologies for enzyme and product optimization, with applications in enzyme technologies and functional biomaterials.
The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) at Aalto University is renowned for research in advanced materials from natural resources and sustainable chemistry and engineering.
Requirements: Recently obtained PhD (within five years) in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field; sound knowledge and skills in molecular biology; experience in microbial engineering and/or biomaterials is beneficial; demonstrated expertise in disseminating scientific results; prior expertise in teaching, supervision, and project management is an advantage; ability to drive interdisciplinary research and contribute to teaching and supervision; good command of English.
What we offer: Opportunity to work in a well-resourced community in Espoo, Finland, with a supportive team, access to high-end infrastructure, and career development. A fixed-term contract for two years with possible extension, starting salary of approximately 4000-4200 EUR/month, occupational health care, and comprehensive social security.
To apply, submit a letter of motivation, CV including list of publications, and names and contact details of at least two references through the ‘Apply’ link by 31.10.2025.
