Offer Description
INEGI-Instituto de Ciência e Inovação em Engenharia Mecânica e Engenharia Industrial announces an open call for a Doctoral’s student in the scope of the HOOPLA with the financial support of FCT/MCTES, under the following conditions:
Scientific area: Master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Work plan: Development of Meso-Scale Models for Fibre-Reinforced Polymers with Microscopic Defects.
1. Grant duration and regime:
Duration of 12 months, starting in September 2026, potentially renewable up to the extent permitted by the relevant regulations. The granting of the scholarships does not generate or entitle a legal-labor relationship, it is exercised under an exclusive dedication regime, and the Scholarship holder is granted the Scholarship Holder Status, in accordance with the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., both in their current wording.
2. Activity scope:
The main objective of HOOPLA project is develop computational models for the high-fidelity finite element (FE) analysis of the behaviour of advanced thermoplastic-based composite materials. These models will effectively link the structural and micro-scales, capturing the complex deformation mechanisms at the microstructure and the strain-gradients observed when failure occurs.
Main responsibilities:
- Identify the main microscopic defects existing in fibre-reinforced composites, and develop descriptors for such defects.
- Support the development of micromechanical models including defects.
- Develop mesoscopic models (ply-level) accounting for the presence of microscopic defects.
- Document research findings, process steps and results in reports or for scientific publication purposes.
3. Scientific supervision:
Dr. Igor Lopes. The work will be carried out in INEGI or FEUP facilities in Porto.
4. Academic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Proficient knowledge of programming languages such as Python or others.
- Basic knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of composite materials.
- Experience with the finite element method for structural analysis.
- Experience in the characterisation and modelling of composite materials.
- Experience in writing technical reports, scientific papers, or project documentation.
- Initiative, sense of responsibility, organization, autonomy, resilience, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Critical thinking and goal-oriented mindset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts and effectively present results to team members or mentors.
